Ayacucho is more for the history buff. -Many colonial churches. They are variably open so you might want to inquire about the schedule -It has some inca/pre-inca ruins -You can visit the the battlefield where Peruvian independence was obtained. Peru, was the last colony in continental Americal to do this (too much gold :/ ). -Food can be quite good. -Locals may still dress in colorful folkloric outfits and they still listen to their typical Andean music (huayno) Of note, Ayacucho is poor, but locals are trying to change this. Do not expect Cuzco or Lima. If you can be on the go, 3 full days should be enough.
Ayacucho is a handy stop off point if you're driving from Lima to Cusco. Please note that the 3S highway between Ayaucho and Cusco is not safe due to road blockades and car-jackings (Oct.2016)... proceed with caution!
Ayacucho is a fascinating Andean city. Lots of history, ceramic and art. We took two tours with Peru Travel ehich is located right near the Plaza de Armas. One was to Huanta and the other to Wari. Both were well worth it. Transportation was good, safe and comfortable. Weather was awesome !! We were a group of three women and felt safe throughout our 4 day trip. Great private tour guide for the three of us when not doing the big tours :Gustavo 51 999 013 142 reasonably priced and very knowledgeable. Locals were friendly and always helpful with directions. We ate at Via Via Cafe a few times, food was excelent. Breakfast was included, basic but tasty. Coffee was great!!
Ayacucho ist a city with great history. It has many churches. There are many places to visit. They have very nice celebrations, like Easter week. They have handcraft, like carpets, and wood figures.
Amazing place, beautiful nature, great people super handcrafted, and with unique historical places in Peru.....Ayacucho is a must for any tourist in Peru!!!!
I wento to Ayacucho to work, but at night I had the opportunity to vist the city. The churches are marvellous. The typical food is nice. I went to eat at Las Flores restaurant "Cuy Chactado", Via via restaurant is also very nice.
Huamanga could be a great tourist city, except it isn’t. It houses 33 monumental churches, but you cannot find a city map with all/most of them signaled that could be used to walk tour them. Most stores in the city center seem more aimed at locals than tourists. Museums in the center and in the locatios themselves (museos the sitio) are poor even though the ancient Wari civilisation, the Ayacucho battle that sealed Southamerican independence and most recently the the battle against terrorism would provide so much material. However, being at Pampa de la Quinua is like being in Valley Forge or Waterloo, some minutes there and you feel how terrible that battle must have been. The Wari ruins are still in the process of being unveiled, but what you see is already impressive and allows you to see this first Peruvian empire in perspective. There are other promising historical and natural sites to visit, all several hours away from the city centre, which makes it difficult to cover in a short visit.
Ayacucho
The description and photos matched my expectations. Very friendly staff, location is away from the business of the plaza de armas, and transportation is good via taxi or bus. If you need wheelchair access or no-steps room, be sure to contact them directly if possible to make it happen. Excellent hotel, I would highly recommend. The city of Ayacucho and its people have much to offer, and teach, to any visitor: clean, fun, respectful, and hospitable. Much to see and do there, the zoo, trips to Quinua, Wari, Pikimachay, etc.
Ayacucho
The lady who runs this hostel was amazing. She let us check in early since our bus arrived in the morning. She was really helpful and made us a breakfast which we did not expect. The room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. The shower had hot water too. The location was quite nice since it was surrounded by a lot of little markets and restaurants. There is also a kitchen upstairs that you can use with quite a good view of the city. I definitely recommend staying here if you're in Ayacucho.
Ayacucho
It was probably the best Hotel we had in Peru, from the extremely Frindly Stuff (the owner and his family) to the exelent service we resived. We had the feeling of a 5* Hotel (European standard) we woud recommend it to ever person who is looking for a stay in Ayacucho. Thanks for the great service that when beyond ouwer wildest dreams. We hope we will meet again. Best regards Philipp and George
A very new hotel in the centre of Ayacucho. A short walk from the main square and historic district. Friendly and helpful staff, well-appointed room with modern private bathroom. Large selection of options for breakfast. Secure parking garage.
Location was all right, close to main square
The lady (the owner?) was very kind and friendly! She helped me to pick up a taxi for going to the airport. it really helped me a lot!! I could use the kitchen to make dishes and coffee.
