The room was typical of a newer Japanese hotel (with a window between the bathing area and the bedroom!), the breakfast quite superb, with local foods along with a wide variety of options, including made-to-order omelets. Of all the hotels we stayed during our one-week trip to the northern parts of Japan, this was overall the most elegant hotel experience, It was a wonderful start to our journey. It is conveniently located across from the Sakata station, in a new building which houses the city library and high-end fashion shops.

We have stayed at a Shigeru Ban designed place in Karuizawa before, but at around three or four times the price of what we paid here. While that one felt very secluded, this one had a bit of a communal feel to it. Breakfast was nice (not too many vegetarian options, but clearly labeled), and the breakfast area was gorgeous.
