Nandkanan Zoo and the Safari were awesome, not to miss. Udaygiri, Raja- Rani Temple, Lingraj Temple were beautiful. The city is less crowded unlike Mumbai and that itself was pleasing. Could taste famous lassi, Dalma Chawal,Channi Poda, etc. Shopping of Orissa Saries and other traditional articles was good. Most important attractions were Konark Sun Temple and Darshan at Jagganath Puri Temple. Beaches in Puri were good.
I have visited Puri many times but my latest trip to Puri was from 26 - 30th May 2016 Apart from the stay at Hotel NILADRI (which was a nightmare!!!), everything was good. Starting from trip to Chilika with dolphin watching and sea mouth visit, to Nandankanan safari, visiting Pipili for shopping nice applique designed bedsheets and crafts.Please bargain with cabs as they might demand a high rate. For Chilika round trip - around 1000 - 1200 INR is a good deal for an Indica / swift Dezire. (Its a Half day tour) For dhaulgiri+Udaygiri+Khandagiri+Linga-Raj Temple+ Nandankanan+Konark&Chandrabhaga Beach / Pipili&Raghunathpur - around - 2200 - 2400 INR (Its a whole day tour.) Visit to Sri Jagannath temple has always been awesome. Special Khajas from the temple are mouthwatering. Auto fare to Jagannath Temple is around 80-100 (one way). PLEASE NOTE: the temple's Garva Griha is currently closed for next one month for renovation. you can view the Bigraha's from a distance though. The sea beach near swargadwar road and infornt of PURI hotel is too much crowded and really full with food vendors resulting in pollution and deafening noise and smell of rotten fish . Its really becoming a mess and the Orissa Govt. should immediately pay attention to this matter.. to keep the sea beach clean. Comparatively the beach after swargadwar more (Around hotel new sea hawk and Sri Hari etc.) is much more clean and nice.
Sun Temple. Sun Temple. Sun Temple. LOVELY! Visit when the light is full, to enjoy the hidden intricacies of the stone sculptures..It's everything and more you read about in school history books! A cab from Bhubaneshwar (or Puri) takes about 1.5 hours to get to Konarka and the road is generally bumpy (with a lot of speedbreakers between Puri & Konarka). There's not much to do or see beyond the Sun Temple, and clean, healthy (or even hot) food choices practically non-existent. Good to pack a few snacks or a meal before you head out. The Chandrabhaga beach is the other attraction here but the sea in Orissa generally tends to get rough and highly treacherous, so be careful. BUT don't miss out on the local delicacy (a sweet one!) known as "Pheni" - crispy, sugary delights made of flour, folded into several delightful layers and dipped in sugar syrup - sold near the temple. Pick up the ones from the bottom of the pile, to avoid those touched by flies! Don't let the general atmospherics turn you away...
Bhubaneswar - a land of history, temples, and architecture. Owing its splendid architecture to the ancient rulers during the Ganga dynasty, Orissa boasts of some of the most careful and arduous sculptures found in India. The folklore and history (sometimes ambiguous) surrounding the temples provide them a strong significance in religious as well as scientific realms. The architectural marvel that is the sun temple, a huge chariot on wheels dedicated to the sun god, showcases the understanding of trigonometry and even magnetism. The story goes that a magnetic rod was used to complete construction of the main 'vimana' which centuries later started hindering navigation of Portuguese ships driving them to remove the rod, which caused its subsequent collapse. The Sun temple, Lingraj temple, Puri Jagannath temple are must visits. The temples can get a bit crowded but Getting around Bhubaneswar is easiest if you travel via public buses. They're clean and not too crowded and connect to most places. Cab tours charge an exorbitant price for relatively short tours. There are quite a few night parties on the beach during full moons that solo travelers can also attend. Word of caution - steer clear of solicitors. They come in the form of guides, drivers, and worst of all, priests. Don't go near them, don't entertain any conversation, and be very careful about giving them any money. While some of them try to make an honest living, most of them are crooks who just want your money in the form of donations . However, Orissa, in all its beauty, is a great place to visit. It's hot and humid owing to its coastal location. Keep your sun-screen handy, drink plenty of water and stay safe.
Puri
I did appreciate the staff, who were very professional, courteous, and importantly, approachable. The property is at a superb location at the base of one of the most beautiful "mohana" (estuary) in orissa, which made it worth the visit. The property surroundings are not in the best of states right now, with a bridge construction work happening right outside the property walls, its a hazzard at the best of times, and a definitely unsafe for children safety.
Our stay was really marvellous. The hotel does not have many rooms so the service is extremely personalized. teh amenities are excellent. The pool that is available at Mayfair Lagoon across the street is marvellous, so is the place at Mayfair Lagoon, which is completely integrated with Mayfair Convention. There is water, newspaper, soft drinks and snacks provided at no extra charge. The place is well located, in an area that is not noisy, but still right next to pharmacies, and small shops.
