Sorong is the only big town of Raja Ampat: it's polluted, dirty and despite its colorful look - which makes it attractive for tourists - it's not a nice place: the inhabitants don't speak English and look at tourism only like at a source of easy money...the beaches are the less beautiful of all west Papua, and the people the less friendly. If you go there for the first time and you don't know what real prices are for service like taxi or okjet (taximotorbike) you probably won't realize people are asking you higher prices than it was due. Nothing relevant to visit, viewpoints and landscapes are unworthy if compared to those of most of the small islands ( over 1 thousand) in Raja Ampat. No relevant divespost for scubadivers, birdwatching also is much more fulfilling on other areas. The only positive point is that Sorong is the only island with true paved roads where tourists can go biking or motor biking... for the rest is only a turning point where tourists are obliged to pass through to switch to further areas and islands. There is a ferryboat that connect Sorong to Waisai, and from Waisai other boats will drive tourists to various, more attractive destinations. I spent there only 1 night to take my flight back to Bali, but I've been there some 2 or 3 times for asking visa extension to immigration office ( Sorong is an administrative center, despite the regency is settled in Waisai, the actual capital of Raja A. ). As I went there with a local friend I had the opportunity to check how much lower the prices were if everything was arranged by local for locals... Not a good feeling.
