This was a new hotel for us and it was an amazing find. The hotel was very clean, the room was larger than expected, the bathroom and shower were great. The breakfast was the best we had on our entire trip. Breakfast was exceptional, amazingly wonderful and so very delicious. We talked about this hotel every day on our Christmas Market Trip. I'd like to go back to Erfurt just to stay here! And yes, the staff were so friendly and helpful. If you're nervous about not staying at a chain or trying something new...take a chance, you'll be glad you did!

Erfurt is a bit difficult to get to from the Uk . We flew from Manchester vto Hannover then travelled by train to Erfurt but the journey through Thuringia is rewarding and Erfurt is a delight and a central location for travel to Weimar , Gotha and Eisenach which are all very attactive towns Travelling on German railways is very easy and modestly priced . Buy a railcard from any staion or on line for further reductions . Punctual , clean , fast and comfortable too . State Owned!
It's a small town in Thuringia, Central Germany. Very walkable and picturesque, especially popular for outdoor acticities.
A bustling city but not particularly geared up for English visitors as some of the basic info in the Tourist Information Centre is only in German. For example info on the Thuringia card and Erfurt card were not terribly user friendly. That is probably because Erfurt airport has yet to be discovered by the budget airlines. There is however a little booklet in English of a circular walk which can be bought and that takes in most of the major signts
Great thuringian food at: Schanzenblick and Gasthof "Brandt" Lovely hikes, especially to the "Felsenhaus" and "Unterland" Train connection was very reliable - with beautiful views A visit to the glass factory is a must, especially visiting the Christmas shop in July
Ideal city,to base yourself,if exploring Thuringia. City has a lovely historic centre with many well preserved older buildings and nice little squares.
Gotha is a fascinating city in Thuringia, Germany. It has many good restaurants as well as some interesting tourist sights. The latter include Friedenstein Castle (one of the largest Renaissance/Baroque castles in Germany and former residence of the Saxe-Coburg Gotha family) and the Historic Museum which hosts an exhibition about municipal and regional history and the local culture. There are also several renaissance patrician houses around Hauptmarkt and Brühl which show the city's wealth through the 15th and 16th centuries. Public transport is good with buses and trams offering connections to the surrounding disctricts. Also, there is Germany's only remaining inter-urban tramway (Die Thüringerwaldbahn) which connects Gotha with Tabarz in the nearby Thuringian forest district.
Friedrichroda is cute little town in the middle of the Thuringian Forest. It's a beautiful sight, looking at that snowed in, romantic location.
Lovely, friendly, small town, easy to walk around. Right beside Wartburg Castle and the Thuringian Forest. Lots of good places to eat. We went to the Lutherstuben and Augustinerkellar, which both serve traditional German food. There are also a few great old kneipes juts off the Marktplatz! The Lutherhaus and Wartburg Castle are both fascinating. The short but steep walk to the Castle is worth it for some beautiful views over the surrounding forests. There's also the Bachhaus and Thuringian State Museum.
We loved the beautiful buildings and coffee shops. We just the beginning of the Christmas markets but enjoyed the last of the Reformation celebrations. A train ride through the Thuringian forests was very picturesque
The staff at this hotel were amazing! Really understanding and helpful in a somewhat difficult situation. They confirmed my belief that Thuringia as a destination generally and the Werra Valley in particular is one of the most underrated parts of Germany. Also, as everyone else has reported, the breakfast was pretty good. And the bathrooms are big enough to sleep in (I know, because I had to do so).
Very nice comfy Hotel in the centre of Gotha with less than 5 minutes walking distance to downtown and the castle. The staff was super friendly. And I can also recommend the Hotel restaurant serving local and typical thuringian food but in a modern way.

Berghotel is located at the top of a small mountain in a heavily forested area. It is a 15 minute walk up a hill from the main tiny Friedrichroda Train Station up a winding road that passes the town cemetery. Or at the prior stop northwest of the hotel at the bottom of a ravine is the Reinhardsbrunn-Friedrichroda tiny Train Station (more like a train stop but the S-Bahn #4 and several city buses also leave from near there), and it's a 15 minute walk starting up a dirt road to get to the Berghotel. There is also a bus that runs up to the Berghotel, but it comes only a few times a day. The staff in the hotel were excellent and there was always one at the reception desk or the visitors aid desk who spoke excellent English. The room was clean and spacious enough, and my window faced northwest overlooking the forest from which small deer would sometimes emerge to chew on the grass or other herbaceous vegetation when it was dark. This is a very large hotel with the capacity for hundreds, and from the outside looks like something very blockish from the East German era. The dining area is huge, and the morning breakfasts are well supplied. The S4 tram (every 30 minutes) at the Reinhardsbrunn-Friedrichroda stop takes you to Gotha Train Station in about 40 minutes at first wandering through the forest and then through farmland and past little villages. If flying into Frankfurt, this would be a better choice to get to Friedrichroda with just the change onto the S4 (separate ticket, Euro 3.90) than the Deutsche Bahn choice of two changes (in Eisenach and then Frottstadt). With my 6 night stay at the hotel, they also gave me a "Thuringer Wald Card" that entitles the traveller to get on just about any bus/train/tram that is in Friedrichroda, including the S4 which as mentioned goes to Gotha (which itself is well worth a visit).

The Rittergut is an amazing manor house bringing together old and new in a beautiful way. The owners have done an incredible job to recreate the place and if you look at the photos of reconstruction you know how much love they've put into the whole estate. The breakfast was great too ... no problem getting gluten-free food and some of the jams were self-made. I would certainly recommend staying there.

At the old market square in Erfurt, just some stops by tram from the railway station. Very beautifully decorated flat with everything you need, cosy and clean! No elevator, so don’t bring too much to carry up the stair to the 2nd floor. Excellent restaurants right outside the flat.
