Full of charm and history, the ancient walled city of Qufu is definitely a must-visit for any traveler visiting Shandong province. Being the hometown of Confucius, the city offers a good value for money (150rmb), combination ticket that provides you access to all three of the main Confucian sights - namely: Confucius temple, mansion and cemetery (known as the Confucius Forest). Qufu is easy to navigate around on foot and all sights are within close proximity of one another, however, pedicabs and local buses are easily available and pretty cheap. Due to the size of the city, it is perfect for a weekend retreat or a two day mid-week stopover.
It is the capital of Shandong and is relatively close to places of interests with lots of culture (under-rated). Can't see if the hotel help organizing tours to places of interest around Jinan at the back of 2000 years of history. City: Lack of English translations and not too easy to get around if not knowing Chinese. Relatively polluted. Locals are generally behaved.
Tai'an is a good 3 day side trip from Beijing to explore real Shandong province which is the origin of Chinese culture. Climbing Taishan (Mount Tai) is a great experience. Tai'an is a medium-size city (by Chinese standards), easy to get arond. Qufu, the hometown of Confuzius, is within 1 hour distance by bus.
Great beach city in Shandong. Do go to the beer festival and most certainly visit the Golden Sands beach venue. Take a walk along the water front and have a good time.
If you are in Shandong province near Jinan and don't know where to go, I would recommend spending a day in the city center of Liaocheng. It is a small city that offers what a typical Chinese city can offer...old buildings, nice temples and pagodas, city walls and some modern bridges with strange shapes. There also many restaurants where you can give local cuisine a try.
