They also helped us arrange a car to visit Qinghai Lake. We had some cocktails at the bar which were very pricey, but delicious.

There's nothing to do in Xining really, it's quite an ugly city with big grey buildings under construction everywhere... However, it's a good starting point to travel in Qinghai province, where there are countless things to do and visit. Xining is two hours from Qinghai Lake, which is amazing, but there's not so much hiking possible there, we only went there for one daytrip. There are also monasteries around, like Kumbum Monastery. We stayed three days in Xining, and it was far enough to discover the city and the places around, then you'll have to go further into the mountains to see more!
I was in Xining for less than 24 hours on my way to other locations. Xining has some interesting places. I took a very long walk along Nanshan Road and found a monastery up on the hill that was peaceful and quite beautiful. A lovely find as I never use guide books. I then went on my way to the main square in town which entailed walking through a frustrating maze of underground shops with tourist kitch to cross the main streets. The square was much like squares in most Chinese cities - a great place to people watch with local musicians and dancing, families, tourists, games, kites and readers. On my way out of town, I stopped at the main museum of Qinghai history. If you like museums and like to see the history of an area from ancient times to present, this is a great museum to spend an hour or two. Taxi's are plentiful and all were honest and drove directly to locations I asked for.
Interesting City. I was in Dashizi for a couple of days and right outside my hotel were busy bustling streets to wander round and discover things. I remember going to the main square/crossroads and down some steps and found a whole underground world of shops to wander around. As the city was at an elevation of around 2000 meters and start of the Qinghai Tibet railway i stayed a couple days here to start to get used to elevation before travlling on to Tibet. I enjoyed staying in Xining. I didn't see many western people here.
Too dry but a nice place to stay for a few days if you are having a trip in Qinghai Province.
Xining was unknown to me but I'm really impressed. 2 days were enough for visiting places inside the city. I liked the public transport getting to sites, however getting familiarised with the Baidu map app is worth for the bus routes. About the things to visit: The Dongguan Mosque is really impressive. I enjoyed visiting Museum of China Tibetan Medicine Culture and Qinghai Art Museum (next to Qinghai Provincial Museum). Unfortunately I couldn't climb up to Beishan mountain, it was closed. But I found a Catholic church (天主堂) that I couldn't find at any travel site and I had a look around at the 'construction and furniture' market, both on the way to the mountain. Another rarely mentioned attraction is the Pearl Tower (高原明珠多功能观光塔). I went to check it because there was not too much to see in the Botanical Garden in April. The tower is a must see, there is a wonderful view to Xining from it. The entry fee is either 50Y to the viewing platform on the 5th floor or 120Y to the restaurant on the 7th floor. The restaurant entry is actually a voucher and could be fully redeemed on food so it is worth to go there for a lunch.
The main reason we were in Xining was to acclimatize for the trip to Lhasa as Xining is half of Lhasa altitude, and to take the overnight train to Lhasa. The malls and shopping strips are just like any other major city. The city Islamic mosque and the Tibetan temples are good, but not the reason to visit to Xining, but if you are there, these good for a spare afternoon. Qinghai lake is worth visiting, but takes the better part of a day. Y 700 - 800 by a black Taxi from the hotel. Recommended.
It's our first stop to Qinghai lake and it was relatively easy to get around. Wish we had more time to visit the places of interest in the city.
