I can not stress enough that people need to see the Yukon and area. The beauty of the land and people is like no other place I have been. Make the trip to Skagway, Alaska while you are there. Well worth the drive.
Whitehorse was an awesome city to visit. The restaurants and coffee shops were in abundance, and food orders in the restaurant were Yukon size. The location close to the mountains and a nice day drive to Carcross and Skagway, Alaska - a must do! Friendly folks and the downtown stores were a treat to visit and talk to the locals. I would definitely make another trip to Whitehorse and add another day to check out other places within driving distance, or break up the trip to see what other places the Yukon has to offer. This was a great trip!!
Downtown Whitehorse, including Yukon Visitor Centre and Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre, and SS Klondike sternwheeler, were worth a visit. And walks by Miles Canyon and through Yukon Wildlife Preserve were exceptional.
Dawson is so small - see everything. From historical Gold Rush buildings to the Jack London Museum and cabin he used to live in. To the Gold fields where history started Aug. 16th 1896 / 7 and obviously the wilderness surrounding the "City" along the Yukon River. A must is the incredible beauty of the Dempster Highway going North toward the Arctic Ocean and the Tombstone Park, just 120km from Dawson City. Another must is the "Top of the World Highway" with its amazing views as it travels the top of mountain ridges and to the Alaska border. From the Midnight Dome you can take it all in and maybe you never want to leave............and to get the real feel of this Gold Rush town camp or rent a bed / cabin at the Dawson City River Hostel - just across the river over-looking the Yukon River and the town while roasting marshmallows on a open fire.
Biggest town in the Yukon and on the long drive you need to have something a little more than a gas pump on a turn out and 5 minutes of call service to check in.
We'll, you don't have too many options along the Alaska Hwy, and Whitehorse is the biggest! Plenty of options for food and a few good things to see in town. If you're driving through the Yukon, this the best place to stop for the night.
Great base for seeing sights in the Yukon Territory: Midnight Dome, Dredge #4, SS Keno, Jack London and Robert Service's cabins, the confluence of the Yukon and Klondike Rivers...gorgeous scenery, relaxing walks along the Yukon River, fantastic food at Klondike Kate's (we ate all but one dinner there and then regretted that we went to another restaurant that one night!)...Dawson City is a quaint, walkable, historic gold rush era town without the super touristy feel of some of the towns in Alaska (like Skagway). Other than the grocery store we hardly spent any time looking at the shops in town, so I can't speak to that. Everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful. One definitely needs a car to get around outside the town--we had driven up from Whitehorse so that wasn't a problem for us. Loved our three days there and would definitely go back!!!
Whitehorse is an attractive city, with good restaurants, shopping and lodging. It is the capital of the Yukon. The downtown has similar Old West architecture, reminding visitors that it has been a center for commerce and industry fo many years. Tourist attractions include the SS Yukon, a restored steam boat, and the White Pass Railroad Depot where tickets for thescenic train trip to Skagway are sold. (Parts of the trip are by bus, but this outing is well worth the time and money.)
Not sure if we got there too late in the "tourist" season, but nothing to do at night but walk around downtown and look at the Yukon River. That was good enough for the trip I was on. The goal was just to get out of Juneau, AK rain and have a good time. We accomplished our goal, but I guess I had unrealistic expectations of doing something in Whitehorse.
Came for the Yukon Quest. Many local winter activities like skiing, sled dog trips, etc. Beautiful nearby drives. Rental car helpful to get around as Whitehorse area has a lot to offer.
Whitehorse
Very quite and comfortable room and bed. The host Marcel was always helping me if I needed a recommendation or advice for traveling the area (e.g. hiking advices). He knows the place for a very long time, is very open-minded and likes to share stories and recommendations for Whitehorse, Yukon and Canada as a whole. I had many interesting conversations with him and it was nothing but a pleasure staying there! Thanks again, Marcel!
Whitehorse
The apartment was in a very good location. It was stocked perfectly with lots of condiments & pots/pans for cooking. The place was very clean. The owner had kindly left us some Yukon wine, beer & popcorn for us celebrating our recent we engagement which was very thoughtful. Also, very good communication with the owner - whenever I had a question it was answered straight away.
The hotel location is good, being downtown and close to the Yukon River pathway. The hotel is a bit dated. It is not an "elite" facility, despite its name. Our room with two beds was large. The beds are reasonably comfortable and the rooms are generally clean (notwithstanding finding several pieces of dog kibble on the floor and some plastic food containers under the bed).
THe staff were awesome along with the bartender lady(Lisa)..they exceeded our expectations.....thought the hotel would be newer , but turns out everything in the Yukon is old..we stayed in a cabin built in 1898 in Dawson city and it was great. Remember no elevator and we were on 3rd floor(good work out with your luggage.) I would recommend this hotel.
Haines Junction
The cabin for two was really nice and the shower upstairs is great. It was very quite and you were able to sit together and enjoy the view. The staff was nice and very helpful..all in all a cozy hostel with a good location in the yukon
Teslin
Great staff! This is a simple hotel in the Yukon, so it's not upscale, but it was really comfortable and safe. The staff are attentive. The room was very clean. Everything was just fine and a great value for the money.
This is the worst hotel I encountered in Yukon so far. Bathtub is clogged. As long as somebody is walking upstairs, the noise will wake you up.
Very helpful very friendly staff. It felt like a boutique hotel on the Yukon river
Exactly what one would expect for an older hotel in the Yukon
Very good location for the Airport.
The room was well kept, hot shower, a (big) bath tub as well as the (big) fridge in the room we chose (Room #24) made a very comfortable stay. The location near the town center was great, the parking was spacious and right in front of the room door. The coin laundry in the basement was very helpful for us esp. on coming back from a multi-day canoe trip. Another thing I must mention is the friendliness & helpfulness of the front staff - they kindly accepted to store our luggage while we went away for the river trip. Big thanks to Tony, Ana and the other charming lady (Sorry I forgot to ask her name) for accomodating us so nicely. I as well as my wife & daughter enjoyed our 3nights' stay so very much.
I was told there was no complimentary breakfast available:((( So I didn't have it!
The gardens were beautiful The house warm and cozy
Beautiful views and lovely cabins!
The view was breathtaking, definitely something you do not get to see every day. The staff was so kind and made the stay that much more enjoyable. Food was delicious and the breakfast buffet was very convenient.
Very friendly staff at the front desk. The young lady helping us was very friendly en helpful. she even returned a extra night of parking fee which we accidently booked. A+ Pretty also :-)
Loved that they had AC. Very clean, coffee maker in room. Good location. Helpful staff.
