Our stay at Arcadia Lodge was lovely and I honestly didn’t want to leave. The lodge itself is beautiful, with gorgeous kauri wood floors, a balcony that looked out on a bay, a cheerful kitchen garden, and stunning views. Peter and Greg, our incredible hosts, made the experience unforgettable.
Peter’s culinary creations were a highlight of each morning—everything he prepared was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtful. From fruits harvested straight from the garden to savory crêpes, homemade crumpets, and chocolate hazelnut croissants, every meal felt like a warm hug. Greg was a wealth of knowledge, always ready with spot-on suggestions and advice for the day’s adventures, adding so much to our trip.
Our room was a peaceful retreat, with a comfortable bed and a sitting room with an expansive window that quickly became our favorite spot to enjoy a cool ocean breeze, drink pots of cozy tea, and eat homemade cookies you could help yourself to at any time. The soothing sounds of birdsong and the peaceful atmosphere made every moment here feel like a vacation.

The views were sensational and the apartment was fabulous! We were extremely lucky to get fresh baked bread the first morning and the second morning we got home made crossaints. Both mornings we had fresh fruit, yoghurt and condiments. Such an awesome place to end our Honeymoon and 3.5 week trip around New Zealand.

The Villa was exactly as advertised and more. The location was right on the bay for swimming, with kayaks and beautiful grounds. Very peaceful setting. The Villa itself was very comfortable with everything you need and tastefully done. Even tho it says you are a bit isolated, you are not alone, which was great. There was a nice man who runs the food cart at Bland Bay and he cooked up the fish we caught at Oakura - fish and chips! Open M-Sat 5pm-7pm. I remember seeing the listing online and thought “I really want to stay here”. So happy we booked, we so enjoyed our stay!
Ideal for nature lovers looking for a self-sufficient getaway, lodges are fully furnished and have kitchen facilities. Usually made of wood and surrounded by forests or mountains, lodges can be part of a group or a single unit. More remote than vacation homes, lodges are popular for safari trips.
We usually use a different hotel when in Russell, however this year due to lack of availability we used The Commodores Lodge for the first time.
The Commodores Lodge is very central in Russell with bars and restaurants nearby.
We were very impressed with the room and the facilities, the room was very clean with good facilities.
Rowena was very helpful and went out of her way to help us. The pool in the courtyard looked very inviting, though we didn't use it.
I had a great stay at Titore Lodge. Karen is so kind and welcoming, which made my stay even better. The room was spacious and the bed was super comfortable. I also liked that there is a hiking trail right by the property, so I could walk/hike into town (I did not have a car).
Great location right on Russell waterfront. There are picnic tables reserved for Lodge residents just above the beach with a fabulous view. We enjoyed eating a picnic dinner out there one evening. Simply fabulous.
While there is a pool we didn't use it as the Lodge is only a few steps away from the beach and preferred to swim in the sea. We did warm up in the spa pool after one swim which was very nice.
Well appointed kitchen to do breakfast, lunch and simple dinners.
The hostess was very helpful with all our requests.
We loved the peaceful location of the lodge, the generosity of the hosts, the relaxed elegance of the property and the outstanding breakfasts! Don’t miss this treasure and ask them to book you into Sage restaurant to round everything off.
We enjoyed everything that Hananui Lodge had to offer. Excellent location and amenities. It was such a great family break. Would definitely return! We loved staying in Russell.
Arcadia Lodge was a very cosy & comfortable stay in a much loved and maintained historical building with bay view. Peter and Greg know the area well and gave us great recommendations of places to visit.
Peter’s breakfasts were superb! He produced unique and delicious food every morning - even during a power failure.
Greg’s hospitality and attention to detail was above and beyond!
Our hosts, Peter and Greg made our stay a memorable one. The lodge is a two storey beautiful character home with wonderful views of a harbour. It’s a short easy walk into Russell. The breakfast provided was gourmet and plentiful, beautifully cooked by Peter and presented by Greg. They offered helpful information about the area including great eating out options and excursions. Highly recommend this for your stay in beautiful Russell.
The best hotel in Northland. It can only be surpassed by boutique lodges, but then the prices are relevant.
I've stayed and dined here many times since the multi-million-dollar refurbishment was completed, and the staff continue to make The Duke my favourite place away from home.
