Baldwin Street

San Francisco may lay claim to ‘the most crooked street in the world’, but New Zealand is home to the steepest. Although just 350 metres long, the hike up Baldwin Street will test your calves to the fullest, thanks to a jaw-dropping one-in-three gradient. Guinness World Records officially recognises Baldwin Street as the world’s steepest residential street, but can you rise to the challenge?

I thought it a shame that the street does not market itself better. The local cafe at the bottom of the street was closed (for good?) but if you walk along the main road a little further towards the city, you will find a corner grocery store that has been converted into the most eclectic and lovely cafe. Was very impressed with it's homemade food and all the eclectic displays from yesteryear,
