Hotel Japan Shiga, hotel in Yamanouchi

Located 5577 feet above sea level, Hotel Japan Shiga is located within Shiga Kogen in Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, 328 feet from Shiga Kogen Ski Resort’s Ichinose Family Ski Area where guests can...

We stayed in the caravan, which was a trailer home on the slope. We could almost ski directly from it. The place was well set up for people who want to make their own food, of which we brought a lot. It had a big refrigerator, microwave and electric kettle. We ate on the floor from the coffee table, but there was a sofa that you could also eat on. The trailer had its own internet router which worked very well for streaming Netflix; something not typical for Japanese ski resorts. The hot water heater worked very well as well, meaning nice hot showers. The room had a small bath but there was a small but clean indoor hot tub at the hotel that is free to use. The place is very close to the Ichinose bus stop. You can take the bus for free to any Shiga Kogen area slope. But frankly it was not necessary as we were already right on the slope.

Clean, quiet building with beautiful, spacious bedrooms. The views are spectacular. The staff were attentive, kind, informative, and friendly. The dining experience was a real treat, consisting of multi-course meals in private dining rooms. We had a room with a private onsen that looked out over the mountains. The shared onsen was enjoyable too.

Shibu Hotel, hotel in Yamanouchi

Offering a free-use reservable hot-spring bath, shared indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths, and traditional multi-course dinners with Shinshu beef, Shibu Hotel is 8 minutes from Yudanaka Train Station...

The staff was helpful and pleasant. The food was great considering it is a traditional Japanese meal. We were a group of Asians and Caucasian Americans, with not everyone used to eating traditional Japanese food, but everyone enjoyed the meals. There was plenty to eat, and it was fun to discover what was next. I strongly recommended adding the meat option to round off your meal.

Jigokudani Monkey Park

Animal enthusiasts can’t miss this park. Set in a valley, it’s home to a group of beautiful snow monkeys. On the way in, you’ll pass a few as they sit in the trees - and once you get to the hot springs, you’ll see why Jigokudani’s so popular with visitors and locals. Here, red-faced monkeys bathe in the warm water, Zen expressions across their faces.

It was OK - depends on how much experience you have with wild life in other parts of the world. The walk is about 40 minutes each way. The monkeys completely ignore the gawping humans, which is great. Unique experience but getting there and back using public transport was challenging

If you are going in winter wear some proper shoes as it is icy, muddy and wet. Try to go in the first half of the day as you see the monkeys chilling out before the staff start to feed and interact with them.
