The entrance closes at 4 p.m., so if one has a longer distance to arrive there and only stay one night, you cannot walk the grounds, even if you don't want to visit the castle. This should be thought over. For us walking the grounds and taking pictures of the castle from a distance would have been absolutely sufficient.

If you have visited other Royal houses and expect the same then you will be disappointed. It is basically a walk through gardens designed to flower in August when visitors are not there and a trip into the ballroom. Beware - hardly any seating for not suitable for elderly or those who need to rest. Very small mews tearoom and currently temporary toilets, but new services are being built. Long walk back to exit with NO seating. Sadly I felt unwell and being unable to rest did not help. I know it's a Royal summer residence but we got the feeling they did not realy want visitors and they were not catered for adequately. Visit Windsor and Sandringham, much nicer!

As beautiful as I thought it would be.

As beautiful as I thought it would be. I was stunned by the massive girth of some of the trees and their incredible heights. The King is now planting many more trees and redoing the formal gardens. Since he has an incredible sense of design, the gardens will be spectacular in a few years. I loved the walks around the estate and all the informational signs explaining the history of buildings and traditions. The estate has done a marvelous job.

Grounds were disappointing and need tidying up.

Grounds were disappointing and need tidying up. Although the Royals use this for their late summer retreat, it is open for long periods to the paying public and activities to keep tidy should not be geared to the Royals arriving . However, the surrounding area is stunning

Kath is a truly helpful and considerate host and made our short stay very enjoyable. This is a great location in the Cairngorms and very close to Balmoral Castle. Crannach House is being restored throughout to a very high standard reflected in our accommodation. Most comfortable bedroom, large desk/table space and views over garden containing an ingenious bird feeding "station" that also attracts red squirrels. Large modern en-suite with walk-in shower.

Just 7 miles from Balmoral Castle, where we had a fantastic visit. Its a must see from April to July. Lovely Scottish breakfast and good choices all freshly cooked. Also Tea/coffee, fruit, yogurts etc. Good room, comfy and clean with ensuite facilities.

Ballater is a little luxury village right next to Balmoral Castle. Lovely downtown with beautiful houses, great shops and restaurants. St. Andrews house is itself a small castle. The owners live downstairs and upstairs there’s some rooms plus and apartment rented out for guests. We spent 2 nights in the apartment, it was very nice and specious, clean and had everything we needed. Easy parking in front of the building. Natalie and Tony was very welcoming and made us breakfast freshly every morning. We felt like royals.

The location was beautiful, we had a great view from our window, of the mountains. The evening menu looked amazing and had we checked into our rooms instead of going strait to Balmoral Castle we would have chosen to eat at the hotel, but it was getting late in the day and we wanted to visit the grounds before they closed. We did have a nice drink by the fire however, and a chat with the staff in the early evening.
