Australian War Memorial

A striking structure that has commemorated the fallen since the end of WWII, this isn’t just a memorial but acts as a national archive, museum and art gallery. The courtyard forms an impressive entrance, while the bronze inscriptions on the walls mark the life of every Australian who has lost their life in battle.

We had arranged for two family members who had died overseas in World War 1 to be honoured with a Last Post Ceremony. The people at the museum were warm and welcoming, thoroughly informed and supported us through the process. They staged a moving tribute and at all times felt it was their privilege to honour our loved ones. Lest we forget.

Definitely worth a visit. The museum is huge, so much to see. High quality exhibits. The tours were very well organised and the tour guides extremely knowledgeable. And it's all completely free - donations accepted but not expected.

The Last Post Ceremony is a must. Very moving. We were invited to lay a wreath during the ceremony to commemorate my Great Uncle. Totally unexpected but the Memorial staff we’re so well organised and everything was provided for us to participate. The whole Memorial is well managed and respectful to our veterans. Take advantage of the staff and their knowledge. They were incredibly professional and helpful and they have excellent knowledge of the memorial and the history within its walls.

Museum part of the Australian War Memorial gave me the stories and horrors of war. Give yourself plenty of time to read and learn, it is scary to read what us humans can do to each other, important for all of us to understand the misery of war. Hall of Memory, The Unknown Soldier all who worked in War Memorial told us not to miss. Don't Miss It. It took me to a silence, respect and somewhere within it will complete your visit.

An excellent display, a beautiful place to visit - but it's a building site, and doubts formed in our mind about whether the proposed new build at the front of the site will destroy much of its historic value and the vista of which it is a part which includes a linear visual line from Parliament through to Mount Ainslie. We had to enter not through the front entrance, but the side. Again, is the Australian taxpayer getting good value for money here?

Australian War Memorial is a place of deep cultural significance that allows visitors the opportunity to gain some insight into the realities and cruelty of war, as well as the bravery and heroism of those who have been involved in the conflicts Australia has been part of. The Last Post Ceremony is a truly moving experience, not to be missed. By far the highlight of our trip. All staff, Administrators and Curators are to be congratulated on their wonderful, ongoing work.
