The hostel was the perfect combination of traditional Japanese accommodation and hostel culture with young gregarious people from around the world. It was one of my favorite hostels ever. It was clean and comfortable and the facilities were amazing. Everyone was so kind and friendly. What a perfect place.

Entire House Popotel One, hotel in Asahi

Only a few steps from Matsumoto Castle, Entire House Popotel One features free Wi-Fi, A rental vacation house and a free-use kitchen. It has a living room, a garden and drinks vending machines.

I realize it's stated clearly here, but I was not prepared for how large this space actually is! It is a former hostel which could easily house 10-15 people across multiple bedrooms and you get to rent the whole thing! It has an unheard-of amount of space for lodging in Japan, and it also happens to be within view of Matsumoto Castle and within easy walking distance to the main draws of Matsumoto city. Definitely don't pass on this option if you are traveling with a large family. We were sad to check out.

Guest House Ichiyama Shukuba, hotel in Asahi

Guest House Ichiyama Shukuba has a shared lounge, terrace, a restaurant and bar in Matsumoto.

The property is right between Matsumoto Station, Matsumoto Castle, and other key sightseeing locations (as well as the restaurant/bar area), making it perfect for exploring the town on foot. The shared facilities were also a nice touch, as there was free coffee/tea for guests and it was very spacious. Personally, I most enjoyed the room itself, as it was well air-conditioned and the bunks were quite spacious. (We were the first to check-in on that floor, so we were able to pick the one extra large bunk in the back of the room.) The host was also very kind, and there was plenty of information available to tourists.
