Budget travelers know there's no better way to make the most of their trip than by staying at a hostel: Save money for exploring during the day, and swap stories with fellow backpackers in the shared kitchen or bar in the evening. Dorm-style bedrooms with shared bathrooms are standard hostel fare, but private rooms are also available for those willing to pay a little more.
Super nice couple that run the youth hostel make the difference here. I had a two twin room that was large and spacious and I really liked the sink in the room. Showers were just across the hall and very clean. The breakfast in the morning was simple but good and worth the extra money.
Lorna & Karl, the managers, are brilliant: and have been since our first visit here back in 2008. And if you have kids don't hesitate just book it. Port Charlotte is the best hostel in the West :)
It is a very nice hostel. It is not modern, however doesn’t lack of anything. The position is a bit faraway from Port Ellen, but it is close to Port Nahaven where we saw (free of charge) a lot of seals. Port Charlotte is a nice village.
Breakfast is OK, what makes this a good stay are the the hosts Lorna og Karl which are very friendly helpful and service minded. The facilities are very good, one of the best youth hostels we have tried. the location is beautiful and a good central location for the island.
The hosts are very nice and helpful.
The location on loch Indaal is superb.
Dining hall and lodge are perfect; and very well maintained.
Pot Charlotte restaurants were full when we arrived, as I did not book in advance, (even though I was warned to do so by the Youth Hostel) but hosts helped !
It's a youth hostel so you can't expect 5* facilities, but the place was clean and the staff was very pleasant and helpful (which is very useful on your first visit to Islay)
This was yet the best hostel I've ever experienced. There were comfortable, clean and softy beds, completely arranged kitchen, lounge with desk games and TV, free parking. And on top of it very kind personnel.
The crew was exceptionaly nice and welcoming. They made sure we'll get the best the place has to offer.
I believethat the place is the best you can expect from a youth hostel
