Centrally located in Xi'an, Honglu Garden Hotel is set just beside Xi'an City Wall, only a 5-minute walk from the Zhuque Gate and a 15-minute walk from Yongningmen Subway Station. The location is good. The ladies in reception were very friendly, helped us to call for a taxi, advised where to go and where to have a food.

Located within 600 metres of Bell Tower and 3.7 km of Xi'an City Wall, Memory Garden House provides rooms with air conditioning and a private bathroom in Xi'an. Pros: 1) Near to Drum Tower, Bell Tower, Muslim Street, Ancient Wall and other attractions in the area. 2) Very easy to find halal / muslim food. 3) Staff is not able to communicate in English but they do have translator on hand so communication was easy. Check-in, check-out and room change were done easily with the help of the translator. 4) Very nice looking and spacious room. Looks quite new. 5) Near to Metro station.

East Coast Coffee Inn is a recently renovated homestay in the centre of Xi'an, 4 km from Xi'an City Wall and 4.7 km from Drum Tower. This Hostel is simply outstanding. I have had 31 days travel in China on this trip. I have stayed at hundreds of different hotels and hostels during 12 years travelling and working away from the UK over the last 30 years. Miss Lu, who runs East Coast Coffee Inn has been the best host I have ever encountered. The hostel is spotlessly clean, situated just across a quiet road by the Xi an city wall. It is a four minute walk to the Tibettan Guangren Temple. From there it is just another short walk to the City gate. Immediately left and you can stroll along by the canal and river where trees and very well kept gardens give a lovely evening atmosphere with singles, couples and families enjoying themselves. Many evenings women meet up and dance for a couple of hours to music from their recorder. Maybe 50 maybe 30 maybe more. It varies. But they dance classic and modern, fast and slow. In the morning others gather to spend time in Tai Chi. It is a fascinating sight. The hostel is super modern, Ms Wu uses the Internet to give you as many locations, all on maps ready to go, as you need. The water at the hostel is piping hot all day. Busses run from by the Temple. Next door to her are a totally delicious BBQ restaurant with a big, low cost menu. On the other side is her Coffee shop. The situation, though central to the best places to go to, is very quiet so you sleep like a log. I came to China for the history, culture and food. Ms Wu put me in touch with Mariano who took me on a tour. He has 2 majors, Spanish and English. His knowledge of Chinese culture and History is amazing. Really deep and good information flowed non stop for the afternoon. He is well worth trying to hire if he is available and his area knowledge saves you so much wasted time and money. Honestly his tour, tailored to you is very cheap but seriously Interesting. There are plenty of washing machines and dryers, 4 of each, all new on each floor. Soap powder supplied and all free.

The room - a spacious apartment with 2 bedrooms and a living room. The rooftop overlooking the walls (we couldn't get enough of that view, morning and night). The owner, Linda - she let us leave our luggage there on departure day, invited us to tea and had a very interesting conversation with us! We'll definitely be back!
