Mama root lives up to the reviews and I’m so glad we slightly altered our itinerary so we could stay here. It is truly a magical place and Mama and Papa root were wonderful hosts and have fostered an incredible chilled out vibe here. We stayed in 4 or 5 different places during our visit to Zanzibar and Mama root was definitely our favourite. The food was also delicious - the best food we ate during our stay (will be dreaming of the cinnamon toast at breakfast for a long time!!). We will be back!! Thank you Olivia 😊

If you need to unwind in one of this Planets most beautiful spots and aren't too hung up on luxury, this place is for you. I had a great time and truly appreciated the kind, honest and helpful hosts, Sarah and Omi and their lovely children. Simply the best host family you could imagine.
Also I enjoyed the food cooked and grilled by Sarah and Omi. Fresh Kingfish, Barracuda and Dorado. But what really knocked my socks off was Omis charcoal grilled octopus.
Oh, and the breakfast is great. Good coffee, fantastic mango fruit, chapati bread, eggs and some variation from day to day, wich is not something you should expect in all Zanzibari hotels.
Oh, and did I mention that from the fine terrace you step right into the Indian Ocean. And 500 yds to the west lies about 50 fishing dhows at their buys. An hour before sunset is a good time to enjoy the fleet sailing into the sundown. I had binoculars and a cold sundowner beer ready..
About noon the tide comes in and its time for swimming. You can get dolphin and snorkeling tours from the nearby village that also has some good and laid-back restaurants.
There is no AC but a good fan in the room. I found that to be sufficient.
I believe I'll go again January next and take my wife with me. I think it would also be a great place for young families with children.

I can’t describe how impressed I have been with this place. Each and every staff member have gone out of their way to make me feel comfortable and happy. Food is delicious, staff are attentive and friendly, accommodation is clean and comfortable. I was even upgraded to the beautiful beach house as it was available during my stay. Wonderful Vacation Days in a Great Accommodation
I had the pleasure of spending a fantastic vacation here. The accommodation was not only beautifully located but also very clean. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful – I felt welcome from the very beginning. Whenever I had questions, both the owner and the staff were always there to assist me.
The location was simply perfect! There were many restaurants and bars nearby, and the hotel is right by the sea – ideal for daily swimming and relaxing. The food was another highlight: freshly prepared every day and absolutely delicious.
What I especially loved is that this accommodation is perfect for everyone – whether you’re traveling as a family, solo, or with friends, you’ll feel right at home. The rooms are also aesthetically designed and very cozy. Another great aspect was the help with planning daily excursions. The host assisted me in organizing my day, and everything was arranged professionally and smoothly.
I felt completely comfortable and can highly recommend this accommodation!

It is a really nice place and the staff if very friendly and helpful. The room was nice and you really feel the privacy. We liked the breakfast very much, which was prepared thoughtfully by Ibrahim (and he included small tasty surprices every morning). The room was cleaned twice a day and always with a smile. The veranda had a wonderful view so the morning coffee always felt special. All in all a very pleasent stay.

You were realy great hosts! The pictures show the true location and environment - it is beautiful. And there is a wonderful night sky, with stars and milkyway you can't see in Europe.

Beautiful location, loved the quirkiness of the place, so peaceful and the fire was great at night. Olivia and her husband were great hosts, helped to make husbands birthday special. Helped us with a car wash too. The food was lovely. We only stayed 2 nights on our travels but we would've stayed longer had we been able.
This was our last resort after 12 days on Zanzibar .
It was a great end of our vacation. Superb location , staff and food.
Its directly located on the beachshore where many locals fish , play or try to sell something to tourists.
Its off the track of Paje or Nunghwi so you are more chill and intimate with the people and peer guests .

The locaton was perfect! This was the last 2 night stay of a 14 day holiday in Zanzibar and it was amazing. The rooms, the staff, the food and facilities was unbeatable for the price. A Perfect mixture of Zanzibar (beach, locals and good stay) at one place.
The swing beds and chairs, gave a relaxed feel, I loved the pool, clean and warm and accessibility to the ocean made this place even perfect! Peter is a good host.

We have spent the first 4 nights in Zanzibar. The lodge is welcoming, clean with a beautiful garden. The beach is small but strategically positioned near the interesting fishing village of Kizimkazi . The bungalow was cleaned daily, the food and breakfast are deliciously prepared. The vibe was very relaxing but fun was never too far with the great hosts David and Sandrine and their fantastic staff which make the real difference. We truly had a great time and we will recommend to anyone who want to escape crowded and unpersonal places.
