Travelers on a budget looking to experience a place like a local will enjoy homestays. These simple accommodations are in a private home, where the host also lives. All facilities are shared and in most cases breakfast is included.
The staff is what makes this place fantastic. They are welcoming, considerate, knowledgeable about the canyon and you never feel like you are bothering them. We stayed in Homestay Pachamama before embarking on the Colca Canyon trek and we were able to rent trekking poles from them, they gave us a really thorough map and they even left us breakfast since we were starting our hike before the breakfast service began. The room was cozy and clean.
The best thing about this homestay is the great detailed information they provide for your individual trekk. They speak English, you get a map and they can organise taxis, the next accommodation etc for you. Great service!
The pizza is also quite good! And great homemade bread!
The host family is incredibly nice and helpful. The breakfast is sufficient, balanced and delicious. The hostel has plenty of space (courtyard, terrace).
The hosts offer to hoard the luggage during a multi-day hike.
They were so helpful with planning our hiking trip and have the best activities. We could join an offering ceremony with locals from Cabanaconde, it was so special. They do this kind of local interaction ‘tours’ more often, so if you want an extra special and easy going stay in Cabanaconde this is the place to be.
Ludwig and his partner were great hosts. Helping with everything from free advice and maps on independent treks in the Colca Canyon, to packed lunches with their amazing home made bread to the beautifully presented shop they have on site in the hostel! They allowed us to store our bags whilst we did a multi day trek in Colca Canyon and were able to have a well deserved hot shower on our return (for 5 soles as we weren’t staying another night). We just loved the set up (including attached restaurant) and hospitality!
Cool hostel to stay over for a few days when you want to do a hike with friendly staff. In the hostel we met a lot of fun people who were on the same journey as us. Besides hiking we also went to see the condors and the hostel managers/owners Leandro and Ludwig even took us on a special trip with the locals to experience their annual celebration. We enjoyed it a lot!
After a 5-hour hike from Cabanaconde (recommended to start at Homestay Pachamama!) we arrived at the lodge in Llahuar. The stay has several tiny lodges and 3 hotspring which are very nice after a day of hiking. In the evening, you have the opportunity to order some food at their place for a good price.
Very very nice homestay! The food is also very good. Ludwig is a very kind and helpful person. It was fantastic
