This was an amazing stay. Super friendly staff. We arrived way too early, however could leave our bags and pre-checkin, so we could explore town and when it was time directly get into the room. We could wven borrow an umbrella since it was raining.

Beautiful property, the pictures don’t do justice to how nice this property is. The place is spotless, very clean with well labeled instructions in Japanese and English. Aircon in each room was much appreciated during the height of summer. For a great experience in a traditional home with tatami floors and futon bedding, we cannot recommend this highly enough.

New guesthouse and everything is new. Host has created a good and relatively comfy place to stay and hang and mingle. Bedrooms are clean and very spacious. Host is friendly and wish her well and good running of her guesthouse. There's a great sports apparel shop and an award winning bento set supermarket nearby. House slippers are provided as well as basic toiletry, kitchenette except toothbrush. Big balcony to dry clothes out but no provision of washing machine.

The Temple Hotel is perhaps a bit of a misnomer. There are lots of temples in the area, which is a lovely traditional residential area, plenty small restaurants, and it's a short pleasant walk to Kumano Hayatama Taisha, one of the grand Kumano shrines.
The guest accommodation, just two rooms, is in a rather drab road-facing building, but the rooms are huge, have a kitchenette and huge amounts of free alcohol included. The hotel is, in fact, run by the monks of the temple on the same compound, and the temple is lovely and free to visit, but the accommodation is modern. What's also good is that the bus stop for the Kumano Kodo sites is less than 100m from the hotel. I paid 51 Euro for one night, pretty okay given my relatively late booking, the size of the room and the amenities and tourist-friendly location.
It can be a bit hard to find, as there are many temples in the area. The entrance is from the main road, and there is an okonomiyaki place right by the entrance. It is also good to inform the staff when you will be arriving, as the staff do work at the temple and there is no formal reception desk.

Shingu Guest House Sou is in a small traditional Japanese House with just three rooms. I would say that proved the best value for money on the entire trip. I had a huge private room with access to full size kitchen, a huge lounge, free bicycle hire and a laundry room. The room was really nice, traditional, simple smalltown style, I loved it. The big sitting rooms was really nice to relax in, too.
Travellers on a budget looking to experience a place like a local will enjoy homestays. This simple accommodation is in a private home, where the host also lives. All facilities are shared and in most cases breakfast is included.
Lovely place very central to the train station with great hosts. The private bath was an added treat, and we appreciated being able to leave our luggage securely well after check out. Room is small but the common areas and their facilities make this a great stay.
Convenient location, friendly owner. Flexible about check out time. Clean and tidy shared kitchen and bathroom. It was a homestay/pension arrangement - the owner/ caretaker was in the house next door. There were no other guests so I had the place to myself. Room A on ground floor has no direct window to the garden but the sliding doors open onto the corridor allowing a view from the room to the garden via the corridor windows. The other rooms upstairs may have had a different layout but I didn’t see them.
