This was a truly memorable and awesome stay for us in Kumano. We were kindly welcomed in a house filled with figurines, games and toys from the early 2000s. The host was extremely kind and even helped us set up a projector to watch a movie! One of the most unique stays we’ve experienced in Japan so far! There’s also an incredible restaurant nearby called 食堂 あお where the owner speak English and we got to taste the best fish we’ve ever had! Overall highly recommend!!

A unique stay! We were there only one night but regretted not staying longer. The views are exceptional and the homeowner is so sweet and artistic. She even let us a little message in French before we left, so cute 💞

It was a beautiful place away from the hustle bustle of the city. The owners are very friendly. Very good place to do stargazing. Do check out the falls on the left side on the main road. A quick morning walk up the road from the accommodation is also suggested.
Just a suggestion to people staying:
Pack some food or snacks as the nearest restaurant is around 7-8kms away.

This place is a hidden gem. We felt so lucky to have stumbled on it. I don’t remember the other reviews talking about the exceptional food. We were served such a feast at dinner, including sukiyaki and a delicious grilled fish. When I asked what type of fish we were eating, the owner pointed out the window. When I looked at where he was pointing, I realized we were eating fresh fish from a pond just outside the window.
Please note that the owner is also a dog breeder so there are many dogs on the property. The dogs are not roaming free so you won’t see them, but you will hear barking.
The inn is simple, but very comfortable. The owners are very kind

Traditional Japanese hotel in Shingu. We booked a separate "villa" - essentially a small house, 2 floors, all for us. Walking distance from the station, very nice and helpful host, close to all interesting places in Shingu.

Spotless & spacious room. Shared facilities were also very clean. There’s a microwave, kettle & fridge for shared use which was helpful. The owner was so sweet. There are only two rooms and I was the only one staying on my visit so had the place to myself. It’s across the street from a supermarket & a short walk from train station. All three shrines are also walking distance. Great value as well!

The room and facilities are clean. The location is very good. It’s near the bus stop and the convenience store. And if you wake up early like me and there’s no bus at that time, you still able walk to the Shingu station. The hostel has 4 bicycles to be borrowed with no charge. You can ride it around the city.
Travelers on a budget looking to experience a place like a local will enjoy homestays. These simple accommodations are in a private home, where the host also lives. All facilities are shared and in most cases breakfast is included.
Amazing host family. If you're looking for a quiet place, it's definitely worth staying. Close to two train stations that let you visit other places of the region.
Host family is warm and friendly. The affordable room rate makes everything worthwhile. Location pro: very close 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the surprising Kannon-michi Pass route to Hadasu.
