The owners are nice. Its clean. Great beer options at the small bar. I had a car so the location wanst a problem.

This was my favorite stay during my trip! Surrounded by the countryside, this 280 years old house has all the charms of its age, but still reasonably modern amenities. The staff is especially friendly, helpful, and welcoming. And you can get amazing home-cooked meals too! If you want to go out of the beaten path and explore the rural side of Japan, this is absolutely the best place!

Set in Soma and only 49 km from Zuihoden, ゲストハウス アンブレラ offers accommodation with mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking. The house is cozy and the location pretty, with a lovely view over rice paddies. The highlight, however, were the hosts. Rarely have I been in an accommodation in which I felt so welcomed and received such special treatment. We shared food, drinks and interesting conversations together! They also have a farm and vegetable shop nearby, so we enjoyed their delicious produce, including organic eggs. This is a countryside stay, recommended for those who want to a true local experience.

Located within 35 km of Nihonmatsu Station and 10 km of Fukushima Station, Guesthouse Oyado Iizaka provides rooms with air conditioning and a shared bathroom in Fukushima. The room was very nice. The night I spent there I was one of two people so we each had a room to ourselves and it was very quiet. The hosts didn’t speak much English and my Japanese is still very broken, but they were incredibly friendly and accommodating.

Situated just 32 km from Aquamarine Fukushima, 民宿たきた館 guest house TAKITA-KAN provides accommodation in Iwaki with access to a garden, a shared lounge, as well as luggage storage space. Very friendly hosts who went out of their way to make our stay very pleasant and enjoyable. The building is comfortable, the onsen is great to relax, and the food is so fresh and tasty… highly recommend!

Situated in Kitashiobara, 22 km from Mount Bandai, Country Inn Mori no Gorilla features accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a bar and ski-to-door access. The hotel is a very cosy, clean and charming place with lots of characters. The host, Mr Gorilla-San, and his wife made us feel very welcome. He is a great chef himself, and we enjoyed the tasty 5-course dinner very much. The breakfast served in the morning was equally good in presentation and taste. The hotel is well placed for hikers and skiers to explore the nearby mountains and ski resorts. Would love to stay there again in the near future.

Situated within 26 km of Nihonmatsu Station and 49 km of Koriyama Station, La Union features rooms with air conditioning and a shared bathroom in Fukushima. The facility was really up to date and the bed was comfortable as well. The staff was made of some of the best people I've met in Japan, they spoke English very well and they were really welcoming and fun to talk to. The position wasn't bad either.

Set in Aizuwakamatsu, within 1.9 km of Aizuwakamatsu Station and 4.4 km of Mount Iimori, mooi guesthouse 日新町 offers accommodation with a garden and free WiFi as well as free private parking for guests... Such a good vibe! I really liked my stay here. Asa-san is a very kind and good host, and the guesthouse is very welcoming and clean. The living space invites for conversations, and I have met interesting people during my stay! Aizu-Wakamatsu is a city that grew on me, with a lot of interesting architecture. The gardens (Oyakuen) are beautiful and well worth a visit. The recommendations from the owner were spot on: the ramen close to the house being an incredible place for breakfast or lunch (Uende Yamaga), the onsen/sento is one of the better ones I've visited (Fujinoyu), and the local specialities at Mitsutaya we're great. All in all a 100% recommended spot to spend a couple of nights - I would choose this place over a hotel any day.
