The VIEWS! Sunrise is quite magical in the rooms and on the deck. The house is filled with cool instruments and artifacts. We enjoyed our short conversation with John and he even organized some surf boards for us (even though we didn't use them because the waves were bad).
Kominka Sharehouse Hooju provides dorm beds and private rooms, a 10-minute walk from surfspot Aojima Beach. It features a terrace, a garden and free parking. All rooms come with free WiFi.

The rooms are large and the bedding is comfortable.
It's conveniently located close to a train station and bus stop, so it's easy to leave during the day to explore the Miyazaki area.
If you like nature, this place has great atmosphere with shoji doors that open directly to the outside.
The building has a lot of character and is great for if you're looking for an authentic, classic-feeling building to stay in.
The place is also a campsite and its structure makes it like a cross between staying at an inn and camping.
There is proper bedding, electricity, and air conditioning, so maybe a bit closer to a glamping site, but you are right next to nature.
I consider this a positive more than a negative, but it's probably a good thing to note before booking.
I was wondering how the shared toilet and bath would be, but it was generally nice.
The shared toilet isn't limited to those staying inside the building, but includes anyone camping at the place, but there wasn't a lot of competition during my stay, and things were kept clean.
The shared bath is a single bath for personal use and people staying on the property take turns using it. It has both a shower and a bath, but everyone pretty much just used the shower during my stay. There isn't a lock on the door, but it's clear when it's in use, so it isn't too awkward.
A washing machine is also available for if you have laundry, so it's very convenient.
Warm and welcoming guest houses are ideal for travelers who prefer laid-back accommodations with a personal touch. Usually family run, these hosts will provide local recommendations and even optional meals. Guest houses sometimes feature a cozy living room or a garden – and are still cheaper than most regular hotels.
Ocean Home Guest House has an amazing view of the Ocean and coastline and is surrounded by nature. The host JP was exceptional and showed me around the area including a trip to a local freshwater river to cool off from the summer heat. I highly recommend this accomodation.
This isn't your standard hostel. It's a house near the beach with a really great host. You feel welcome the moment you step through the door. They offer free bike rentals and surfing lessons for a fair price. I sadly didn't stay that long ,so I recommend for the surfing experience to take more than just a few days to stay there.
Cute place that was well stocked so we were able to cook and felt like home after being in Japan for 2 weeks. The neighborhood was very quiet and safe and we loved waking up and sleeping to that silence and sounds of waves and birds. It's also within 15min driving to supermarkets and everything you need.
The hostess met us to explain the house rules, where everything is and how to use everything, perfect host!
I just wish we had more days to spend at Ocean home guest house. Casual and relaxing, the host was helpful and friendly. If you want some time overlooking the sea in a laid back guest house this place is for you.
Very close to the quiet JR Aoshima train station and plenty of parking outside the train station as well. Walking distance to the beach. Aoshima is a very small town all within walking distance. Very neat and well designed guesthouse. Nice kitchen with microwave oven, fish grill drawer, induction cooker top. Good for group stay.
My partner and I stayed at Hooju for around a month and had a fantastic time. The staff at the hostel were super nice and accommodating. Quiet, relaxing stay, with the pleasure of meeting some nice travellers. Aoshima is a beautiful place with fun surf - I hope to be back again some day! Thanks everyone at Hooju for an awesome time!
Shin-san is an awesome host! Very kind and uptodate with the technology. He was always offering to drive me to nice spots, restaurants or onsen. We spent some nice moments with another guest.
He also speaks English pretty well so it made communicating easier.
The room was clean, spacious and comfortable
The guesthouse is located close to Miyazaki station
The house was beautifully situated on a small harbor. The host was very friendly and welcoming (She was a little nervous about using English, but it was no real problem). The house was spotlessly clean, very comfortable, and extremely stylishly decorated. There didn't seem to be any restaurants nearby, but it was 2 minute's drive to the nearest convenience store, and about 10 minutes to a supermarket. The house contained everything needed for preparing/cooking meals. This is a quiet village, so it's not the place for a party.
