The Retreat at Groenfontein, hotel in Buffelskloof

Offering an outdoor pool and a restaurant, The Retreat at Groenfontein is located on a gravel road, 12 mi north-east of Calitzdorp. Free WiFi access is available.

The Retreat was fantastic. We only stayed one night, and regretted it! This location works as a stop over, but as a 2+ night stay it would be a amazing. There are enough trails for a few days of hiking. The grounds are really peaceful, with lots of swimming options. Food was delicious and healthy. Staff was super friendly. The communal dinners are really relaxed and casual. Main house is beautiful and charming, rooms/suites are very comfortable. The whole place left us floored and wanting to return.

Bella de Karoo, hotel in Buffelskloof

Providing a garden, Bella de Karoo features accommodations in Calitzdorp.

This property, about 20km east of Calitazdorp, combines a roadside 'padstal' local farm-products/wine store and restaurant with separate accomodations that are set back some 300 meters from the main road in a tree-shaded glen, and so are quiet and tranquil. I had Room 1 on the northwest corner of the single-story accomodations building, a late 18th Century converted barn with an elevated wrap-around veranda. It was very large, spacious, and well-appointed. Elmarie is a gracious hostess with an accomodating staff. The restaurant serves a variety of home-cooked offerings for breakfast and lunch, including various roosterkoek (Afrikaner-style griddle cakes - delicious!) combos and 'pap en wors' (mielie meal and coriander-spiced farm sausage), both favorites of mine. There is outdoor seating in the rear interiror garden of the restaurant, where some chickens range free. A big plus for me was the Andrieskraal Eco-Reserve right across the main road - a largely untouched mega-garden of hiking/cycling trails through various cacti, succulents and fynbos, frequented by kudu, various small animals and birds, and the occasional leopard, I'm told.

The rock formations are spectacular and unique to this area, with a striking red colour. The hills glow pink and red in the early morning light, in the hour before sunrise. The night sky is joy to behold, with little ambient light to spoil the view.

IF you are doing Route 62, this is the place to stay.

IF you are doing Route 62, this is the place to stay. Situated on a farm just a short distance from the main road but far enough away that the road does not bother you. Excellent stay over and could be a romantic stay for a newly married couple. Self catering or B&B, you cannot go wrong. The Coffee Shop on the main road serves excellent breakfast and is in a lovely setting and also teaches and sells the wares of the local women who learn a trade in the barn structure behind the Coffee Shop. Some excellent goodies on sale at the shop. If your stay is longer than overnight, then you can walk the farm, see the animals and buck and enjoy being out in nature. The original farmstead is the oldest working farm in the district and the accommodation I stayed in was in the old cow stall. The main house also has a few rooms in it as well.
