Getting its Rhythm Back

The home of jazz, intriguing New Orleans evokes images of Louis Armstrong, wrought-iron balconies and mouth-watering Cajun cuisine. Louisiana’s largest city, in the heart of the Deep South, the ‘Big Easy’ is being regenerated in the wake of devastating hurricane Katrina.

One area relatively unscathed was Bourbon Street – where jazz saxophones ring out of traditional bars interspersed by others offering more colourful nightlife. There are several New Orleans hotels near Bourbon Street, spread around the French Quarter with its distinctive Creole architecture.

To the south is Jackson Square, dominated by the Disney-esque St Louis Cathedral. Horses and carts wait patiently by the square, and locals set up their stools and start playing catchy tunes. Just behind is the legendary Mississippi River whose waters are still plied by paddle steamers.

From the river you get great views of the CBD skyscrapers and beside them is the huge Louisiana Superdome sports venue. Booking.com has several hotels near the Superdome, including some on Canal Street – a historic road where streetcars and the famous New Orleans Mardi Gras carnival pass down.

In the northern suburbs is New Orleans City Park, one of the oldest US parks and larger than NYC’s Central Park. Waterways lining it flow into large Lake Pontchartrain bordered by a bayou – the typical wetlands of the state.

New Orleans is a very special city.

New Orleans is a very special city. There is so much history and interesting cultural aspects. If you are a foodie, this city is a must! We loved every meal. If you like brunch, the Court of Two Sisters is excellent. Some favorite activities for us include the National WWII Museum. We spent nearly an entire day there. It is outstanding. If you go there, eat at the cafe in the museum. It was excellent! We also loved the walking tour of the Garden District and Cemetery. We learned so much about the city from our engaging guide. We also enjoyed walking to the French Market, listening to Doreen's jazz band on Bourbon St., and walking through the French Quarter and Jackson Square.

It's not a very easy city to get around.

It's not a very easy city to get around. A severe lack of public communication systems and heavy car dependence make walking not a pleasant experience. But once you get where you need to be cousin is fantastic, and while the tipping system is very irritating it is still worth the price. I was not sold on the city's atmosphere, it was way too chaotic for my taste. It would be much better to enjoy nightlife with a trusted friend. Walking alone at night does not feel safe there

An amazing city with so much to see and do. We hardly touched the surface in a week. So many great music venues, restaurants and museums. This city has it all. The street cars are cheap and easy to use. Getting around by car is also easy.

Unique historic US City, with great music, cuisine and bar culture. Well geared up for tourists. Lots to see and do. Certainly recommend the City museums and a trip to the 'swamps' and Mississippi historic mansions.

I love NOLA!! Come hungry and open minded.

I love NOLA!! Come hungry and open minded. It's a whole vibe down here. Bourbon Street is great but Decatur has my favorite stops. Jackson Square is full of free entertainment where you can just people watch and enjoy the local talent which is brimming over at the seams. If you need a little break from the Cajun delicacies stop in Central Grocer, an old Italian Deli for a delicious Mufalta. You won't be disappointed! Make sure to try some crawfish ettufee before you head home! And let the good times roll down in the Big Easy!!

New Orleans is nice with alot of history.

New Orleans is nice with alot of history. I just wish the governor would fix up the city, there's alot of abandoned buildings, the street has alot of uneven pavement, I almost fall twice, a few lights was down for days. The city look old and barely functioning.
