The view of the river and the balcony were great. The staff was personable and helpful. The pool was nice. We loved the way you landscaped and made it so pleasant to sit by the river Also loved the Roman shades on the windows. Much better than curtains. The beds were very comfortable and the pillows were great and the linens were good. Being so close to Main Street and all of the restaurants and shops was great.

They really saved the day for us. We were originally booked for the hofbrau river front hotel 20 days prior and got a confirmation that they excepted our reservation. Last minute they said they couldn't except it because they did a bait and switch. I guess I shouldn't be surprised because they did that to us last year. Last minute the Heidi took care of us and gave us a suite that was like a mini apartment. This is our new got to place. the location couldn't get any better.

We enjoyed everything about the town.

We enjoyed everything about the town. Plenty of shops and restaurants. We had the pleasure of touring the UHUBURG EAGLE OWL CASTLE, Anna Ruby Falls, Cabbage Patch museum, Hardman Farm, and on the way home Brasstown tower fantastic views. And plenty more. You will not be disappointed.

PROS: A great little town that offers a taste and preview...

PROS: A great little town that offers a taste and preview of Bavarian Germany. Our party of four spent two days and nights in Helen, and this was sufficient to take in Helen and the nearby Anna Ruby Falls National Park. The town was clean and we did not see any graffiti as would be the case in Bavaria. Don't miss the mini-golf course for a little fun. CONS: A little hard to get to and out of, but you can practice your mountain, switch-back curves driving skills. They did not have a Hardy's Restaurant for their southerners who love their biscuits and gravy, but there was one restaurant that offered it. After spending some 30 years in Germany, I must say the closest thing to accurate Bavarian cooking was at the Hiedelberg Restaurant, and there was good value for the quality and quantity of food served for the price.

Oktoberfest has always held a special place in my heart...

Oktoberfest has always held a special place in my heart after living and working in Germany for three years. I decided it was time to share that special memory with the girls by taking them to Helen Georgia. Helen hosts a 2 month long Oktoberfest celebration starting in September (weekends) and going through October (daily). Helen’s Sister City is Fussen Germany! The story of the towns conversion to a Tyrolian Wonderland is the stuff of legends! The townspeople came together back in 1959/60 to transform Helen into a Tourist destination. The average tourist count is approximately 3million visitors a year! The people of the town are kind and treat tourists extremely well. Everywhere you look, Dirndl dresses and Lederhosen, Walking Sticks and Bier steins are colorful and happily worn by tourists and locals. Music fills the air and the FestHalle is filled to max capacity! We stayed at the Alpine Crest in a cute lofted space. Trust me, it was a darn good thing that we had the truck to navigate the incredibly steep and twisty driveway up to our weekend lodging. I highly recommend a trip to Helen! You might just lose your heart to Helen instead of Heidelberg!!

Helen sort of blurs the line between a town and a theme park...

Helen sort of blurs the line between a town and a theme park: the buildings are all decorated in the Alpine style, even the chain restaurants, hotels, and other businesses with no connection to the Alps. This all seems to be designed to sell the Alpine connection. It works, mind you. The town is not that large, so if you travel just to see Helen, you can see it all in a couple of days. But, there are plenty of sites in the surrounding area - hiking trails, waterfalls, antique stores, pottery makers, etc., for which Helen makes a nice base of operations to visit. There are plenty of German restaurants in town, as well as a few non-German offerings; including Thai, Mexican, and American food. We did not have time to sample many, but all the meals we did have were decent, ranging from fair to very good. Helen is pretty well off the beaten path, there being only one main road into and out of town. That is good and bad. The good: pretty much all of the traffic in Helen is comprised of people going to Helen. The bad: when it gets busy, there is no alternative route to avoid the traffic. Because we arrived on a Sunday evening and left on a Friday morning, I cannot speak first-hand about the weekend traffic, but we were advised weekend traffic jams were not uncommon.

The downtown life is great here with a multitude of shopping and eating options. All the shopkeepers are consistently pleasant and helpful even when it seems they are overwhelmed. During busy times the restaurants have wait periods, but most are not overly long, at least for groups of four or less.

The town of Helen is your basic tourist trap.

The town of Helen is your basic tourist trap. The architecture wants to be The Sound of Music but it's all a kitschy knockoff -- charming at a distance but up close, not so much. It's pretend Heidi this, and wannabe Eidelweiss that. The German restaurants are almost all identical, based on the couple I went to and what other folks told me. A basic meal of schnitzel (with a so-so side) and a beer shouldn't set you back $40 a head. And they've never heard of a lunch special, I guess. The "Wine Tasting " rooms charge about $17 for the experience -- ridiculous -- this is Georgia wine, people. The area has good hiking (you need a pass for the state parks, $5 for a day pass) and the Hardman Farm tour was interesting.

Located right on the river. It was beautiful. Bathroom is a little outdated in comparison to the resy of the room, but it was still very cozy. We will definitely be back.! I Love the PET FRIENDLY policy too.
