Nuku’ alofa isn’t set up for tourism.

Nuku’ alofa isn’t set up for tourism. They don’t really understand what customer service means or they just don’t care. While the other islands are beautiful the mainland has very little to offer in terms of interesting experiences.

It was a real culture shock arriving on Tongatapu.

It was a real culture shock arriving on Tongatapu. None of the information on the internet is current or correct, and none of the tour operators respond to your requests so it's difficult to lock in activities. We found it easier booking things in person once we arrived. Cash is king. It is also difficult to get around without a car, so would recommend hiring one, but be aware that insurance can be an issue. That said, we had a great time once we worked out some of these quirks! Highly recommend getting off the mainland to a nearby island or for whale watching. The tsunami destroyed most of the resorts on the island so beware that it's not your standard tropical destination.

    Visiting relatives was wonderful.

Visiting relatives was wonderful. Meeting julie fonua exceptionally great. I ate at a restaurant and it was ok. Not easy to get around but I usally walk around but didnt know my way from there, I have a drivers license but prefer to walk and a map to get around from House of Tonga would have been helpful. Activities my family had arranged so was pretty booked up but was able to catch up with a friend Reverend Atunaisa & Mangu Ngalu.

Beautiful friendly people, lovely location with interesting sites to see. Escape Cafe is great for eats. Plenty of sites to see...definitely go to Anahulu caves and the Blow Holes. Western tip of the island was not great, but there were some nice beaches on the way (southern coast).

Big rooms, with big bathrooms, in a great location for the capital - short walk to restaurants and most office buildings. Nice breakfast and good restaurant/bar on site. Good location for a morning walk along the sea front as well. Hotel also does a paid return shuttle services to the airport.

Hotel is in walking distance to center. Hotel has come to age, no repairs done. Personnel is inattentive and not much caring about guests. Airport transfer worked well.
