We recommend staying right next to Masjid Al Haram.
We recommend staying right next to Masjid Al Haram. We stayed at the Fairmont Makkah Clock Royal Tower, which was a great place to stay. Athan and prayer were always broadcasted through the in-room speakers. Note that after Athan it might be difficult (but not impossible) to get in time from the hotel to the mosque to pray.
For Umrah, focus on your procedures without getting distracted by taking pictures. After Umrah, there is plenty of time to go back to Tawaf to shoot photographs, touch the Ka'aba, etc. if this is important to you. The best time of the day is at night. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays can be very crowded, but still doable. If you want to pray on the Tawaf for Fajr, make your way there way ahead of time (typically the Tawaf is full 1 h before prayer). Authorities are efficient at closing down access points when there are too many people and lead you to areas that are still free. They will not hesitate to split up families, so always make your way around TOGETHER. In fact, when access points are closed down, the main problem is getting out. Then you obviously cannot rely on Exit arrows anymore, and unfortunately most of the time neither can you rely on where people are pointing you to. Most simply don't know or cannot express themselves in the language that you speak.
There are plenty of places where men and women pray almost side by side, so don't worry about losing your family members and always be clear on who comes toward who or where to meet after prayer (ideally back at the hotel if there is time). As soon as prayer is over there is no separation of men and women whatsoever on the Tawaf or in the corridors (100% mixed); only inside the praying halls they maintain some designated male and female prayer quarters. This is great because it enhances the spiritual experience of performing Umrah with your parents, children, siblings, etc.
May Allah make your Umrah as enjoyable and memorable as ours.
