I like Whakatane area it has some great shop's, but when were in the Bay of Plenty we spend most of our time in beautiful Matata and Kawerau visiting with whanau. The beaches in Matata are truly beautiful, Matata is another great place to visit it's 20mins out of Whakatane great for fishing.

Whakatane is great for walkers with plenty of paths and toilets. Its family friendly and very clean. Pedestrian crossings seem to be missing but the locals were great and stopped at all the courtesy stops. We found some great places to eat and notes the town had more than everything you would need. Impressive little place for a short stay.

Whakatane has a huge variety of shopping stores, eating facilities, bars, hairdressers in fact everything really and for everyone. The Hub which is just across the bridge is another shopping area with Kmart and Briscoe being my favourites but again shopping for everyone. Bunnings the huge warehouse is a goldmine easy to get carried away when shopping there. The walkway/cycling lane along the waterfront is an awesome stroll. Accomodation....heaps to choose from....you have to visit to appreciate Whakatane.

We loved Whakatane.
We loved Whakatane. Wandering around the shops or along the river was lovely. We enjoyed watching the boats and everyone was very friendly. Over the hill at Ohope Beach was brilliant for sea swimming.
It was good for the price. Had'nt been to Whakatane before. So chose central. The check in lady rang me three times, (We came from Wellington)...to confirm our booking. Rang me in Taupo... said I was on the way... rang again 20 mins away from Hotel, She was very persistent (it was only 6pm) seemed she wanted to leave and was waiting for us, unfriendly to say the least, no smile or enjoy your stay.
The Motel Lodge has been recently refurbished and everything is lovely, new and clean. The friendly receptionist had upgraded us to a 2 bedroom apartment and we were amazed and thought it was the best hotel we had stayed at. The rooms were large and comfortable with a lovely courtyard and view to the garden. it was very private and tastefully decorated.
We appreciated our stay at the Cortez. It accommodated our family. We near had the entire complex to ourselves as we had booked in advance, this could've been a nightmare for hotel owners, however, they were so relaxed and accommodating that we chose to spend most of our time at the motel. We will definitely be booking with them again.
Overall it’s just a fantastic place to stay with a fairly large group!!! our whanau enjoyed the facilities and everything that the park had to offer! (From the carts to the bouncy pillow to the cabins). A truly exceptional place to stay.
We stayed in the cabins at the back of the motel. They were lovely and clean. The bed was massive and so comfortable. Would definitely recommend these cabins.
