Whakatane is a busy, bustling little town with a vibrant feel to it.
Situated so close to the sea it provides a lot of sporting opportunities for surfing, boating & fishing enthusiasts.
The shopping area and eateries are of a high standard, with lots of choices available. Situated a short distance from the CBD is the Hub shopping center, which provides just about anything you're looking for.
Additionally, Ohope beach is just over the hill & is a laid back beach resort with motels & B & B's aplenty.

Enjoyed the visit where the sea meets the harbour.
Enjoyed the visit where the sea meets the harbour. Narrow channel and with the wind and tide it can make it quite treacherous for vessels to navigate so lots to see. Nice spot to park up and enjoy your takeaway!

We were really only passing through enroute to Gisborne. We found locals very friendly and helpful and had lovely fish and chips at Gibbos along the river, by the wharf, and a walk.
If we had time we would have liked to do more things in Whakatane and gone to Ohope beach.

This was my first time staying in Whakatane and I thought it was a beautiful nice big town however, as our stay was during the New Year period I expected a little more as in some sort of events or whanau/community days or even a fireworks display to roll into the new year.
We ate at the Whakatane sport fishing club and the food there was absolutely amazing! We couldn't fault anything and the cost was well worth it.
We also at at the Awa Cafe which was another gem and couldn't fault either.
Getting around Whakatane was nice and easy.
My partner and I tried the epic escape rooms and well let's just say we have done a few escape rooms and this was hands down one of the best rooms we have done. The puzzles were great, tricky and surprisingly fun.
We also did geo-caching for the first time here too which was great fun!

Shopping is easy with plenty of parking around the back. Enjoyed lunch at the Bakehouse Cafe. New World is well stocked. Had fish n chips at Gibbos on the wharf that were absolutely delish. Went to get oysters at Ohiwa but there were too many people. Maybe next time. Thanks for having us! See you again soon.

Ideal for active travellers because of the attractions such as hiking, cycling, swimmimg and organized activities like a trip to Whale Island. The shops, cafes and restaurants are numerous and suitable for all ages. We enjoyed Ohope Beach and other beaches which were scenic drives from Whakatane. Signage for directions is efficient and easy to follow. We dined at Roquette Restaurant on the waterfront where there was good parking.

We had to rent two cabins - one with bunks and one single studio to fit our family of 5 as other options were booked out. That worked well as we could use the facilities in the studio for our whole family. Kids loved the pool - only complaint was it wasn't open later at night. Overall, pretty clean and tidy options. All walkable to Whakatane centre via walkway, gardens, or nearby streets. Nice environment. No rowdy evenings or super early starts from nearby campers.
The room was great (it was facing away from the main street). It was clean as were the bathrooms, the lounge and the kitchen. My bed was clean and comfortable. The hotel was easy to find and they provided off-street parking
The room we had was absolutely lovely, clean and immaculate. The location of the hotel was very handy to shops, restaurants etc and though it was on a main road the traffic noise wasn't a problem for us.
