It was exactly as described. The room was clean and comfy. The family room was great. Very well equipped with milk, tea, coffee and breakfast foods. The outdoor area was lovely. The restaurant food was delicious.

Barbara's welcome was friendly and warm-hearted to this beautiful slice of heaven just outside of Piopio. My room was well situated beside the spotless bathroom with its own balcony with access & deck chairs. The large bed was comfy. Breakfast was hearty with cereals, toast & farm eggs. I would highly recommend the homemade damson plum jam... I even got to chat with farmer Leo as he was about to attend to the hungry calves. There was a lovely family atmosphere and I felt very much at home.

Mel is a brilliant host and a wonderful person. The room was so homely and the extra touches were an added bonus. The view across the valley was breathtaking, and lovely animals all around. Their electricity had cut out when I arrived but they went over and above to ensure I was fed and comfortable whilst they fixed it. I ended up having an unplanned and totally fantastic evening with Mel and her friends (and Elvis!!) - I only wish I could have stayed longer. I highly recommend this stay for anyone passing through, you won't regret it!!

Location was great for access to Waitomo Village. Very quiet with comfortable beds and good linen. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Nicely located and only 4 guest bedrooms. The owners live above the guest rooms and you are served breakfast by John & Helen every morning. They make very sure you’re full if you leave the table. Two wonderful people very interested in their guest and super helpful.
A small town in a lovely rural area. A decent restaurant for dinner and a great café for breakfast or lunch. We have often broken journeys from Tāmaki Makaurau to Taranaki or other places further south, here. Great to charge your car while staying at the Fat Owl or by using the OpenLoop fast charger.

This is a small town with a big heart.
This is a small town with a big heart. Our first stop was the Fat Pigeon Cafe for lunch - delicious food with a view of the park. We then walked up and down the two sides of the street, stopping to look at the restored old school bus and poster board, the art gallery, craft shop and op shops before having a hot chocolate from the coffee cart at the other end of the street. For dinner we ate at The Night Owl restaurant- loved the decor, the food portions were HUGE and super tasty,

Bàrbara is a lovely, friendly and very accommodating host...
Bàrbara is a lovely, friendly and very accommodating host who made us feel like part of her family.
The location is perfect for tourists and for travellers wishing to purchase seasonal berries and asparagus. So close to famous Waitomo Caves, it is the perfect stopover spot.
We will definitely call in again when next we travel through Piopio. Thanks Bàrbara and Leo. You are amazing!!!
