A Once Ancient Capital Full Of Life

Located on the banks of Trondheimsfjord and famous for being the original capital of Norway, Trondheim is a charming, historic and lively city which offers vast greenery, several museums and several technology-oriented institutions.

It has an array of colourful old storehouses and traditional buildings with red-brick rooftops which line the city’s streets and waterways waterwayswhere you can also find bridges such as the Old Town Bridge.

Visit the waterfront Ringve Botanical Gardens which houses the Ringve Museum and Ladestien, perfect for a stroll. A popular day excursion to Monk’s Island is easily accessible via ferry around the Hurtigruten Terminal Trondheim.

In the heart of the city features many museums and historic landmarks such as the National Museum of Decorative Arts, Middle Ages Exhibition, Nidaros Cathedral, and The Archbishop’s Palace, just to name a few. Driven by a large student population, Trondheim buzzes with life all day long as is evident in the various bars, nightclubs, restaurants and pavement cafés spread across the city.

Just a beautiful city with lots to see.

Just a beautiful city with lots to see. The cathedral is a must see and if you can attend a musical or other, please book in advance. Well worth the effort. A very walkable city with clean streets well catered for pedestrians to circulate the city. The full two days we spend here was sufficient although in summer a 3rd day will allow you to visit beaches and nature walks.

Trondheim is very beautiful, but sightseeing may be a bit...

Trondheim is very beautiful, but sightseeing may be a bit restrained during winter time because the weather is really cold, snowfall is present almost all the time, and the sun sets at 3 p.m. However, I enjoyed downtown, the Trondheim Torg shopping mall, the Nidaros Cathedral and the climb to the Kristiansten Fortress from where, if lucky (not my case) you can spot the Northern Lights. For less than 5 euros, you can also take the tram and ride 8 km right to the forest to see beautifully snowy landscape all along. And do not leave the city without paying a visit to the Pirbadet, one of the northernmost water parks in the world. A bit expensive, yes, but worth it.

Trondheim is about the right size for at least a 2 or 3 full days stay to take in everywhere and enjoy it. The Cathedral is a must as is the Archbishop's Palace and various museums (Military and Maritime Museums) and the royal residence deserve a visit as do the churches around the 'old' town, the harbour and bridge. You can eat relatively cheaply or you can go the 'full hog', try the Graffi Restaurant in the middle. There were still some places to go and see and there was no time.

I love how compact the city was, and the buses and trams made it easy to get around and the day ticket was very affordable. Loved the cathedral, the lake and the fortress. Also visited the two Kunstmuseums. Beautiful scenic city.

One of the most scenic cities I've ever visited.

One of the most scenic cities I've ever visited. The last time I was there,20 years ago, it was winter. It was very pleasant visiting there in Summer this time. The cheapest place we found to eat at was the Burger King. All restaurants were very expensive because we come from a country which has a very weak currency. It is very easy to get around and see most of the sights on foot.

The town of Trondheim is charming, a lovely spot for a day or two before beginning a fjord adventure. The Nidaros Cathedral is truly impressive, and the Bakklandet quarter is filled with lovely cafes and restaurants.

We all loved the sense of space in the hotel with the huge interestingly shaped lobby. Our room felt spacious despite having an extra bed in it and it was very quiet too. Being surrounded by the harbour/sea on 3 sides it felt we could always get a glimpse of it somewhere, especially in the bar on the top floor. Breakfast was great and we had the best barista style coffee we had had in two weeks of travelling in Norway.

I love the breakfast buffet with so many options of food :) I also love the location, is very close to Nidaros Church and easy to walk anywhere downtown Trondheim. Our room was spacious and comfortable to travel with a baby. The separate room gave our baby it’s own dark, quite space to sleep while us parents watched a movie and had food in the living room :)
