Gateway to the western fjords, Bergen is a picture-perfect postcard of Norway at its best. Colourful, wooden houses in UNESCO World Heritage-listed Bryggen contrast wonderfully with the lush greenery of the surrounding Seven Mountains.
For fantastic views of Norway’s 2nd largest city, hop on the cable car to Ulriken Mountain. Alternatively, hike or take the funicular railway up to Fløyen Mountain. With beaches sheltered from the North Sea by islands, Bergen is Norway’s busiest port and a popular starting point for fjord cruises and deep sea fishing.
The fish market in the narrow streets of the historic centre is a popular attraction, while just north is 12th-century St Mary’s Church. Around 100 years younger is Bergenhus, one of Norway’s best-preserved forts. Further north is Gamle Bergen, a reconstructed wooden village offering insight into the past.
Cobbled Strandgaten street and Lagunen Storsenter shopping centre are just some shopping options, but items aren’t cheap. As you wander around the city look for work by Dolk, Norway’s best-known street artist. Other cultural offerings are the many museums and a good music scene ranging from classic to indie.
Booking.com’s range of Bergen accommodation extends out towards Bergen Airport in Flesland, the departure point for many workers on the offshore oil and gas rigs.
I loved Bergen and would have liked to have stayed longer.
I loved Bergen and would have liked to have stayed longer. There is so much to see in this beautiful city. Unfortunately, I was only able to spend 2 of my 8 days in Norway.
I loved the Bryggen area and the shops. I enjoyed taking the floibahn to Mt Floyen and viewing a panoramic view of Bergen from the top.
We had lunch at Olivia on the waterfront and dinner at Villani, both of which I would recommend.

Doesn't require a very long stay. 1 full day will be plenty to see all highlights, i think. But as it is close to the airport, it is a good base on the first day, final day or both-- depends on flight arrival. Loved the fish market by the port but not much else really. Easy to get to with light rail coming the airport.

Bergen was very crowded & busy.
Bergen was very crowded & busy. Despite that, we were able to find quiet out of the way places to go for eat & drinks. Recommend Pingvinen restaurant; good food & service. Recommend the bar called No Stress; eclectic & relaxing. Good place for shopping. Not fun to try to drive around the city though. We parked the car when we arrived & walked everywhere for our three night stay.

Expect rain! The city website boasts of it.
Expect rain! The city website boasts of it. Have a waterproof jacket and enjoy.
The city is small and most things are within walking distance, although it may be up a steep hill!
The train station and airport link are very close to the centre of town.
Visit the tourist info for idea for day trips... the Flam railway is a good excursion, get the train to Myrdal and change there. There are plenty of fjord tours or just get the funicular to the top of the hill and see the goats.
Bergen is small, so spread the day out in the cafes and just enjoy it when the rain stops.
The staff were very helpful and friendly as usual.
Room service was quick and super tasty, albeit too expensive for the portion size, but that's Norway for you.
Quite comfy bed and pillow, and very soft sheets and towels, a step up from most hotels around the airport.
I was very happy to have a room with a tub this time and managed to have a relaxing bath to help me go to sleep before a very early wake up time.
As usual, very happy to have breakfast available at such an early hour.
In short EVERYTHING!!
This was the best stay we ever had during our all time vacation. Amazing apartment. It truly deserves the highest rating among all options. I strongly recommend this to all who want to have a good stay experience along with exploring beautiful Norway overall.
Nice clean apartment in the heart of Bergen city, near to Byparken metro.
Modernly nicely designed hotel, great extensive breakfast with also local dishes, pancakes with cream are the best. Staff is very friendly. We checked in early and the room was ready for us. They also kept my luggage while doing a week long hike in Norway. Would come back here!
Nothing, as due to adverse weather conditions, the wost rain and flooding for 25 years in Norway, all trains were cancelled at 2hours notice, and all flights fully booked, so there was no way to get to Bergen.
