The water is beautiful. Salty sea water gets a little tiring after a few weeks. It was such a pleasure to be able to dive and swim in "a lake."

Great coffee shops with DELICIOUS coffee. Restaurants were good but then most in Mexico are. Nothing out of the ordinary there.
I may well be back before I leave the Yucatan ... but ... there are still SO MANY MORE wonderful places to visit. It truly was the "lake" effect that grabbed me.
When you're in the area, en route to Mahuhual do stop in at the Mariposorio that's on that road. WELL WORTH the 200 pesos/individual.

The Bacalar lagoon is gorgeous, warm and swimmable.
The Bacalar lagoon is gorgeous, warm and swimmable. The town itself is pretty chill with a lot of younger tourists, and it would appear many visitors from Canada and Europe. If you like kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing and swimming, this is a great place to visit. There are also Mayan ruins and cenotes to explore within reasonable driving distance.

We totally enjoyed our time in Bacalar and wished we could have stayed longer. But that just means that we will have to come back.
We took a tour around the lagoon with Bacalar Sailing @bacalarsailing and it was great. 4h passed super fast.
The best was waking up every morning and doing a bit of Kayaking and Paddle board on the lagoon!
Also at night the Zocalo is a fun little spot with lots of restaurants around. Plus if you want to purchase souvenirs, prices here are way cheaper then in Mahahual for example. Little bracelets go for 30$ pesos here and in Mahahual they sell them for 100$ pesos for example.

Beautiful lake, warm enough to swim, optional boat trips. The town offered many restaurants, some seafront and some in the town, we had the best meal of our holiday in Mexico in Bacalar. Very relaxing and would recommend it be included if you are exploring that area.

The lagoons were out of this world gorgeous and relaxing. Everyone we interacted with was pleasant, kind and gracious. The restaurant options were remarkable considering the small size of the town. We didn't explore much outside our hotel and Centro Bacalar, however there were many options for great day trips and tours nearby. It was easy to fly into Chetumal and take a taxi to Bacalar.
We ate many times at Xant Ha since we stayed at the Maya Bacalar Hotel, and it was fantastic! El Manati had fantastic food and the art gallery with gift shop was a bonus. La Playita has incredible atmosphere right on the water and the service was excellent. Food here was just OK. We had a great time getting to know the owner at Sweet Child of Wine, and she served us tasty tapas as we sipped local wines. Enjoyed our meal at Nao Sushi, great location on the water.

Great place... starting to be developed and you can imagine once the Mayan Train route is complete, it will be... so go and check it out now!
Oh and Mr. Taco is the best restaurant! delicious, friendly staff, great food and super reasonable... we ate there 2x/day!

Our favourite hotel from our 3 week trip travelling around Mexico. The pool was amazing as was the room and bed. The restaurant where guests get 10% off was great and was so lovely to try some mexican wines. Staff were fantastic, especially the man who comes around at breakfast and helps you plan your day, giving great advice. My boyfriend was sick the last day and the staff were super helpful. Great location close to everything you need in Bacalar

My favourite stay in the whole of Mexico. This place is amazing and everyone should stay here during their time in Bacalar. Lovely private apartment to yourself. The family who run it are amazing, so helpful and lovely. They couldn’t do enough for us. Very clean and comfortable space and the location couldn’t be more perfect if you tried. 100/10!!
Favourite place we stayed in Mexico! Pool area was beautiful and clean. Room felt like luxury after travelling round Mexico. Comfy big bed and the WiFi and TV connection were excellent. 5 min walk from the centre of the restaurants and bars and then from there it’s not far to the river side places also!
