The facilities on-premise were truly excellent, and meticulously catered after. Neatly manicured lawns, with excellent furnishings and craftsmanship that extends all the way from the reception to the rooms and the dining areas. Access to the nearby beach is also safe, with multiple shower points and ancillary bars to relax and drink at as the waves ebbed by. Overall, Severin Lounge is a very relaxed and relaxing environment, ideal for these off the beaten path needing a quiet place to unwind. There is a specific type of clientele that this facility targets, and despite it's near-perfect appearance/presentation, a lot of potential is wasted on truly appalling service delivery and utility.

The Ivory Suites is centrally located walking distance to the market, the Tusks, an interesting Hindu Temple, Old Town and some very good restaurants. The hotel is clean, safe, wifi works, comfy room and has an attached restaurant where a great breakfast is served. It is located next to a bus terminal so it's a very busy street outside. It may appear sketchy but I found it safe. I walked through the street waiting areas day and night and was never bothered. Just people going about their business. The staff I met Brenda and Angela were delightful, friendly and helpful. I met Adam the manager/owner one evening and he very interesting to chat with. Overall a good value no frills pleasant stay hotel.

Mombasa city itself was a typical 3rd world city - noisy, crowded, with no street appeal. I only passed through so didn't explore.
However, all along the coast were the resorts - varying from OK to extravagant.
The beach would rival the Maldives if it weren't for the thick heaps of seaweed - only cleaned near the higher end resorts.
Well worth the money are the safaris - even the half days trips.
Although everywhere is iron bars and heavy gates, there was no actual sense of danger and people were very friendly.
Weather was consistent - hot and sunny.
Food varied from inexpensive bland to very expensive international fare.
Unfortunately where I stayed (Shanzu) there were no street venders, so I didn't have a chance to try them.

Mombasa - totally wasted time. Unsafe and nothing to see.
Mombasa - totally wasted time. Unsafe and nothing to see. A family from Europe would NEVER stroll around without guards in the city center. The whole city is totally worn out, garbage everywhere and very depressing.

Everything about our stay was wonderful. I’m extremely satisfied by the way the staff handles the guests, very polite, helpful and friendly. The hotel is definitely a great value for money, the location is superb, lying directly on the Nyali beach, one of the nicest beaches I’ve ever been to. The food is nice, make sure to book a room with a coast view and breakfast included. Their breakfast is very nice. DON’T forget to try their massage, the best I’ve had.
Nice relaxing hotel a short walk away from the old town. Big rooms, good AC, a lot of charging points, which is great. Attentive and friendly staff, provided free water. The attached restaurant served good food till late. Mini fridge in the room as well. Highly recommended for a stay in Mombasa. The area felt reasonably safe, I walked back at 7 pm as well without feeling threatened.
Located in the heart of Mombasa's old town, this hotel offers great ocean views and a relaxing atmosphere. The food was good, the hosts were friendly, and the room was comfortable.
