FAQs about hotels in Tokyo

See It to Believe It!

The capital of Japan, Tokyo is a vast, teeming metropolis nestled between mountains and Tokyo Bay. It’s so huge that you’ll have to come to grips with public transport and maybe even experience being pushed onto a train. Yes, it does actually happen!

Get your bearings by ascending the Tokyo World Trade Centre near the waterfront, and savour the fantastic views taking in the red-and-white Tokyo Tower and Shinkuju’s skyscrapers. North is Ueno, home to the best museums (including the Tokyo National Museum) and a large park bursting with cherry blossom in spring.

Equally tranquil are the Chiyoda Imperial Palace and Gardens, surrounded by water. Also in gardens is the Meiji Jingu Shinto shrine in Shibuya, a youthful district where neon abounds.

For more traditional Japanese culture, head to Asakusa whose Sensō-ji Buddhist temple is Tokyo’s oldest temple. Markets in the grounds sell a variety of wares, though shopping in Tokyo is, of course, fantastic wherever you go.

Whether you stay in a Japanese ryokan, luxury Tokyo hotel or a hostel, don’t fly out of Tokyo Narita Airport or Haneda Airport without having tried sushi. Another Japanese institution is the sento (public bath) and onsen (hot springs bath) – a must try. Also incredibly popular are Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, Asia’s 2 most visited theme parks.

Tokyo may well be the greatest city in the world.

Tokyo may well be the greatest city in the world. It is safe, clean, incredibly interesting, filled with a varied and rich history, culture and cuisine, and connected with the best mass transit system in the world. There is a peaceful and kind demeanor to the public face of Tokyo that is captivating and wonderful. I come for a few weeks each year and I yearn to return -- it is so enriching and charming. I grew up in New York and have lived in Boston. Tokyo is a better place.

Who doesn't need an introduction to Tokyo?

Who doesn't need an introduction to Tokyo? It's one of the world's greatest cities! Very dense, busy, lively and bright, it can feel undoubtedly overwhelming but it still is very organized, clean and safe. Also known for having very reliable public transportation. It's a city in which if you travel your own, you're likely to be using their massive transport system. Being very complex, their transit can take longer to grasp but with the modern conveniences of Googlemaps, it helps make things easier than ever before. Tokyo is such a big metropolis that you can never run out of things to do and food to eat. Visit it if you get a chance!

Get an IC card after converting your money into yen for...

Get an IC card after converting your money into yen for railway rides and purchasing items at the stores or restaurants. You can always recharge at the railway stations. Pull money from 7-11 ATM instead of charging your cards to avoid your banking fees. If your phone is capable of using an eSMS its convenient and prepare that before you arrive. Otherwise, you need wifi access to download your carriers platform. Instead of lining up outdoors in the cold for Disney Sea or Disney World, our teens enjoyed Team Lab Planet, Joyopolis, and rides at Tokyo Dome City Center. Visit the Sky Tree and local malls. Be forewarned, most malls and local restaurants close on New Year's day through the weekend. For couples, plan a trip at an Onsen spa during these times. And if you're waiting until check-in time, store your luggages at a station or mall with lockers and go shopping at the malls.

Tokyo is an amazing city with lots to do for all visitors. Our family of 3 (2A and 1C age 11) had a wonderful time exploring this city with trips to Shibuya, Shinjuku, Team Labs Planets, DisneySea and other fun locations. Food was great everywhere we visited and transportation was so easy once you figured it out. We love Japan and will be back again!

Splashed out on this hotel because the location was great for what we wanted to do, husband wanted the views from the huge windows that he saw online, and we had enough in the budget. The views were indeed awesome. The staff members were professional and kind (though no more so than elsewhere), and there were some included in-room amenities eg hot drinks, water, bath salt (beware, they're mixed in with chargeable items - we were not fooled).

We came back to Onsen Ryokan - it was our second stay. The location of the hotel is very good - we like that it is in the center of Shinjuku, but near the park and on the quiet road. We also enjoy the hotel itself - the onsen with breathtaking views, delicious food, beautifully smelling cosmetics, the calm and relaxing atmosphere, and focus on details - including seasonal decorations and explanation of local customs.

The hotel was in a great location, easy access to trains. It was about a 30 minute train ride to the major cities like Shinjuku, Shibuya etc, but we were happy to be out of the hustle and bustle. There are quite a bit of restaurants within walking distance. The room itself was quiet, and comfortable. Small but it didn't feel too small. It was very clean.

Staff were very friendly and willing to help with anything. There was a good atmosphere in the hotel. It is very close to lots of restaurants, convenience stores, entertainment and public transport links. They provided me and my new husband with sparkling wine and glasses to celebrate our honeymoon which I thought was lovely.
