Spotlessly clean. Breakfast was nice, the very spacious room had - I suppose - a Japanese design. A comfortable double bed, a low table and two very low stools, but no sofa, no chair, no desk.
Very spacious bathroom.
A Jacuzzi in the bathroom AND on the terrace!

The deer park is a bit of a non event but is very close to amazing temples and gardens. We also followed the walking route on a map from the hotel- took us to a massive site on the edge of town which has remains of an Imperial Palace. It’s being partially reconstructed. The town felt relaxed and relatively wealthy. Good atmosphere and not overcrowded.

Nara is a beautiful spiritual place, that seduces lots of tourists to visit its famous spots.
But if you avoid the Pagoda, the main temple area, you will find beautiful shrines, real old forests, mountains to hike on to and of course the famous deers are not just at the crowded stops.
Especially after the mid-day-heat, Nara had so much to offer, that I wish I spend a couple more days to explore.
You can take a bus ticket but it's all accessable by foot easier in my opinion.
Be careful to bring food or maps or anything too close to the deers. They are friendly animals but they eat anything. That's how they are trained.
You can buy crackers for them on the way or be like me and buy some cheap carrots to vary their daily treats. 🤗

There is no other place like Nara.
There is no other place like Nara. Todaji Temple, Kasuga Taisha shrine are very special places which are testimony to Japanese people's high achieving asethetics. These main attractions of Nara according to my opinion are near Kintetsu Nara station and all are within walkable distance from each other. So put on your comfortable shoes and have a wonderful trip!

The deer roaming freely was amazing.
The deer roaming freely was amazing. The hub of the town was vibrant. The big Buddha temple was very interesting but I would recommend using a guide. I fell due to uneven loose paver and some were very slippery when wet. Night street lighting was poor tbh. Over all a nice place to visit.

I liked best out hotel, ryokan that accepted tattoos in the public onsen and also had a private bathroom, with an amazing room overall.
The deers are quite agressive, not attacking people but stealing anything they can and munching on your clothes if they smell food on you. Still it was a very interesting experience. The crafts museum was just a small shop, but the games museum was super interactive and fun, with very friendly staff. Both of those were free and close by. In Nara everything is pretty close, walking distance, and the streets are very beautiful with traditional architecture.

As the major cities in Japan become larger and more...
As the major cities in Japan become larger and more identical to each other, they also become a little difficult for tourists to manage easily and feel at home in. But Nara has retained the feel it had when I was last there, half a century ago. Back then I said it was the favourite city, along with Kyoto, of any I visited in Japan. Right now I say it is STILL my favourite city, and in the 21st century it has left Kyoto well behind. If I were spending a week in the Kansai area, I would base myself in Nara in preference to Osaka or any of the "majors", and do day trips everywhere else. You will save on accommodation, for a start!
Our stay at ANDO HOTEL NARA was exceptional. This property is the perfect mix between beautiful facilities, amazing food and great service. The staff was very lovely and attentive and did everything to make our stay perfect. The food at the restaurant was some of the best food we had during our trip in Japan. It's definitely worth booking the panoramic view rooms that offer a beautiful view over the city.
Excellent location, adjacent to the square of the train station and Nara Park, yet the rooms are quiet. Efficient staff, most but not all speak English. Pleasant onsen. Every evening, we received a delicious hot pot soup in the dining room. Several laundry and drying machines. Luggage delivery service from the hotel.
The room was big for Japanese hotels and very clean. The price was very good. The location is very good to reach anywhere in Nara. And the staff are very helpful when you need them. The instructions for you on how to do anything by yourself are so clear.
