The outdoor onsen and the peaceful atmosphere

Great place for runaway from the city. Quite long way from Tokyo (+3h) but there is an express train from Ueno (book in advance) and bus adjusted to train timetable from Nakanojo Station (Shima Onsen line). Outdoor bath in the room was superb, just what you need at late autumn to relax. We also booked private bath room outside and it was good, but if you have bath in your room you can not bother booking private one (quite similar experience). Also loved spa Mori No Yu (just exciting) and Genroku No Yu (also great but different in impression). We had our kaiseki in separate room and we loved every step of it. It was our first time experience, so lots of learning and excitement. Also, before check-in we hiked to lake (water reservoir) nearby and that was quite picturesque walk in the autumn.

Great view from my spacious room onto the waterfall ( l love the noise of the water, but it is not for everyone especially during the night), the onsen was beautiful with night illumination onto the forest, dinner and breakfast was delicious

This was a fabulous overnight trip! I booked on the day and took the highway bus from Tokyo Station to avoid transfers and chill out. I was dropped right out the front of the accommodation where a staff member was unexpectedly waiting to welcome me. I could not fault the service. Staff were so polite and helpful, doing their absolute best to explain things to me when I didn't understand the Japanese signs and such. The rooms are lovely but simple, in-line with Japanese style. The private onsen was so relaxing in the winter chill. You can see the snow on the trees while you soak. The meals were also a whole experience. You wear the provided yukata and get a semi-private space to dine in. At dinner it felt like the courses were never-ending with new dishes coming out one after the other, all immaculately presented. While I was busy eating, a staff member prepared my room for the evening by setting out the futon and the in-room tea set. There were thoughtful little details throughout my stay- could not recommend this place enough! One night was sufficient for me, but if you are driving or coming in a warmer/drier season, you may like to make the most of the hiking trails and neighbouring sights.
