As you admire crystal-clear turquoise seas from a Taormina piazza swathed in vibrant pink blossom, you could be forgiven for thinking that you were in paradise. The stunning location of this picturesque town is its crowning glory.
However, it’s not its only glory. Surrounded by trees just below the main town, the Greek Theatre is also a triumph. Its largely intact seating offers wonderful views across the stage towards Mount Etna fuming away in the distance. Spine-tingling summer performances are still held here, and several of the town’s bars also offer live music.
Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of Taormina, from Piazza Corvaja to the 13th-century cathedral, and houses many shops and cafés. Midway along is Piazza IX Aprile, whose clock tower and church are overlooked by a rocky hill topped with a castle.
A cable car runs from the town down to the beautiful Taormina beaches (where the train station is also found). At the centre of the W-shaped bay is little Isola Bella, an island nature reserve. To the south-west is the long stretch of sand at Giardini-Naxos, and north is the bay by Mazzaró.
As you would expect of Sicily’s most beautiful resort, there is no shortage of Taormina accommodation on Booking.com, including 5-star hotels on the beach, town centre apartments and luxury B&Bs.

We visited Taormina in the beginning of November 2024 but the town was still extremely busy with tourists. Taormina offers several nice shopping streets, a nice park, cultural sites, not to forget the beach area (that we did not visit). Taormina's centre is packed with nice terraces and an enormous choice of restaurants. A great place for a two day visit.

Tourist trap
Tourist trap
Impossible to make your way into the city if you travel with car. Roads are impossible, there's no parking and honestly the city is just quaint. Be ready to get a headache trying to find the parkings or get a fine and to walk behind a horde of humans on crowded streets.
Booked 2 nights, left the first one

Great for exercise, as it is very hilly, and walking is really the best way to get around. Plenty of good restaurants, fabulous sea views. It is a very relaxing small town, with a lot of tourists of course, even in November when we were there.

Taormina was not the highlight of Sicily - I found it overrated and very touristy but it does has a fun Monaco decadent kind of vibe if you like that bit of bling, and was a good base to go on up to Etna

There are two parts to Taormina really - the historic town set high up in the hills/mountain area facing the sea and the beach area which if you are staying in the town can be accessed on foot; vehicle ; or cable car. The historic town is very pretty, chic and very busy - arguably over commercialised. The beach area below the town is the prettiest part of Sicily that we visited - we also went to Catania; Siracusa; and Noto.

Taormina is a marvelous place to visit.
Taormina is a marvelous place to visit. We stayed for 4 days and it was perfect. It is an idyllic place mixed with heritage and romance. Restaurants and cafeterias are the best. Definately recommend Taormina to anyone to escape for a couple of day from the daily routine.

Location was amazing - right next to the beach and away from the very busy centre of Taormina. Highly recommend as it is bliss to wake up on the beach, away from the crowds, and have a coffee and a swim before taking the funicular (a 2 minute walk from the apartment) to the centre of Taormina. I would suggest taking the funicular up and walking to the very top Chiesa Madonna della Rocca, and of course to Teatro Greco. The apartment owner, Massimo, is hugely helpful if you need anything (eg he booked an airport transfer for us).
The Hotel Villa Belvedere is in the city of Taormina and a stones throw from the Teatro Antico di Taormina and the botanical gardens. The hotel is simply beautiful with breathtaking views overlooking the sea and Mount Etna. We booked a 2 bedroom suite for a family of 4 which was luxurious and well equipped. The hotel staff were extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. There was parking at the hotel, albeit at an additional charge. A perfect holiday.
One of the comfiest and cleanest hotels we have stayed in, with great facilities and a really convenient location in the centre, but not at all noisy. Francesca and the wonderful housekeeping lady (I never got her name) were very kind, and allowed us to store our bags for a few more hours after checkout so we could enjoy our morning in Taormina before departing. Thank you so much!
The hotel was close to the centre of Taormina and within easy walking distance as was the cable car to the beach, yet it was quiet at night. The view from our room and small balcony was beautiful. The bathroom had a great shower and room and bathroom clean. Breakfast was simple but tasty and the breakfast room had wonderful views over the sea.
