A walk through a living history museum. Love Matera for its history, and rejuvination into a destination that has become a world UNESCO site. For good reason. The scenery, ambiance, dining, old town, walks and getting lost in the ancient streets, the Living Nativity (Precepe) Christmas celebration, the lighting as the sun starts to set, the friendliness of the people, the food. We hope to go back one day when the weather is warmer. December was quite chilly!

A unique world city that is really worth to visit and experiencing. Someone named it: “ The city that lit the world” and I highly agree with that description in any way.
At the same time you can feel the spirit of prehistory, history and the present time. The beautiful breathtaking views of the city and the regional park Muglia Materana from different points of view in city are just as beautiful with or without sun or moon.
The city offers many cultural and historical contents.

The Sassi area of Matera must be unique.
The Sassi area of Matera must be unique. It was formerly a village of caves, which was closed and the inhabitants moved to more conventional housing in the 20th century. The tourism industry has now reclaimed many of the cave dwellings, and made them into clean, dry tourist accommodation. We were there in mid-November, and were a bit lucky with the weather - it was warm (around 20C daytime) and dry. It must be very hot in summer. You need to be somewhat fit to walk around - it is very hilly, most roads have stairs as part of their routes, and the streets are very narrow, so few cars allowed even when it is possible to drive there. The churches carved into the sold rock are also amazing. Google maps is surprisingly accurate, given the 3-dimensional terrain. There are plenty of good restaurants in the vicinity.

It is a unique place.
It is a unique place. The culture and history of the place is fascinating. You need a tour, preferably a private one or with less than 6 people.
The architecture and buildings are interesting and show what people can endure , but also what they can rebuild and revive.
If you want shopping and ritzy hotels this is not the place for you .
If you appreciate examples of good architecture/design and renovation. Human determination. Amazing geography. Great views. Good restaurants. Good people. Good places to stay; then it is a must.
Very memorable place and experience

Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It well deserves a visit of at least two days. You can book good places to stay and find a variety of good places to eat. Remember that Matera is an ancient hilltop city: cars are not allowed in many sections. Leave your high heels and flip-flops at home. Be prepared to walk (and climb) long distances on uneven cobblestone streets, sidewalks, and lots and lots of stairs. Matera's astonishing architecture -- whether perched on or carved into massive rock--will reward your efforts.

Stayed in one of the cave rooms. The ambiance is unique, and it’s a very special experience. Very clean, staff super helpful and professional. Tasty and generous continental breakfast (you have to preorder).
The hotel is in the old part of town and within walking distance to most attractions (as long as you don’t mind stairs, but that’s how all of Matera is).
A beautiful hotel located in the heart of Matera. Our view was incredible and our room was very comfortable. The receptionist was lovely, greeting us and giving us some restaurant and sight seeing recommendations. Breakfast was also fresh and delicious. I cannot fault this hotel at all and it is a highlight of our Italy trip.
Loved everything about Le Malve Cave Retreat and Matera, such an amazing place to visit and stay. I wish we were there longer.
Best restaurant we had dinner at in Italy called QUID, a total must to go there!!
The whole atmosphere of the old city was fantastic!
Incredible unique stay in a beautifully designed boutique hotel. It's like staying in a cave. The breakfast was also varied and enjoyable. Matera is unmissable if travelling in this area.
