    Matera is a must-see city!

Matera is a must-see city! Part of the Unesco, the old town is fabulous, a lot of history behind it, and great walks for active people, you have to reach the Tibetan bridge! The other part of the city is very agreeable, with lots of big squares, surrounded by nice restaurants and boutiques. Very lively at night, no one eats before 8h-8h30 pm.

Difficult to navigate rules if you have a car!

Difficult to navigate rules if you have a car! There's a learning curve for sure. But the ancient city is unexpectedly beautiful and unique. I do wish I'd taken a guided walking tour and would do so on a next visit. I loved the wine bar we visited, Enoteca dai Tosi, especially the owner, Alberto, and was delighted by how clean, bright and welcoming the city was. The small size of the ancient "Sassi" part of town makes it easy to walk -- no more than 30 minutes from end to end. Plenty to catch the eye - shops, restaurants, live music, bars, churches, caves..... soooo much.

    Matera is just stunningly beautiful.

Matera is just stunningly beautiful. There are really no other words for it. The streets, the people, the food, all were excellent. In fact, our hosts throughout our travels in Puglia and Basilicata always told us to go to Matera. If you are planning a trip to Puglia and Basilicata, go to Matera last. We went to Matera first and were a bit disappointed in the other areas we went afterwards. They just didn't hold a candle to Matera.

    We loved Matera.

We loved Matera. Lots of walking, so not for those who aren't up to lots of stairs ! We did an excellent history tour which is well worth it. Walking across the Tibetan Bridge to the National Park for a different view of the Sassi was also a highlight.

One of our best times in Italy. The room was very clean, it had everything we needed and the owner was very kind and helpful. He gave us valuable information about what to see, where to eat and practical information about shopping. There is a small supermarket around the corner, a bakery with delicious bread and sweets, a salumeria, all in the same block. The room was close to the bus stop for Bari and just 10 minutes walk from the center of Matera. Great value for money and a wonderful host.
