At the southwestern tip of its beautiful lake, Como has wonderful views of the surrounding Alps. A cable car runs up to the village of Brunate, where you can see Switzerland on the opposite side.
The peaceful location is a favorite with celebs, but the town has been around since Roman times. In fact, 2 of its most famous sons – Pliny the Elder and Younger – are commemorated in statues on the façade of the 14th-century cathedral. The next-door Broletto dates to the previous century, and the remains of the medieval walls and Castello Baradello are even older and sit on a hill overlooking the town.
Much more modern in style, the Casa del Fascio was built during Mussolini’s rule. The streets between here and the waterfront are packed with shops, bars and restaurants, and Lake Como boat trips depart from the small marina.
The neighboring park houses a temple-like museum about Alessandro Volta (another former resident), and around the shoreline is elegant Villa Olmo which looks across landscaped gardens to the water’s edge.
The Como accommodations on Booking.com include luxury lakefront hotels, centrally located B&Bs and cheap apartments near San Giovanni Train Station, with direct services to Milan.

Como and the lake are a stunning , but word of warning if you are using the ferrry's up the lake the queues for the tickets can be long even from 0720 in the morning when the ticket office opens . Tickets can only be bought on the day , no advance sales .
You cannot by return tickets for the fast ferry's you have to purchase return tickets at the destination and be warned they sell out especially at the weekend , so ALWAYS have a plan B

Gorgeous lakeside town.
Gorgeous lakeside town. Loved the historic old center w the shops and restaurants. Only there for one night and had to leave early. Would have loved more time. Did walk out on the pier. Very very quaint! Don’t miss the gelato spot right at the edge of the old town and the square in front of the lake. Avoid a car if you can! Parking overnight is a challenge if staying inside the walls of the old center. If you do however download the parking app on the meter. I found the Easyparc one the best.

Very pretty with plenty of place to eat. Interesting market. We found getting a bus around the lake and taking the ferry back worked best for us as the queue to buy ferry tickets can be quite long in Como.

Como is good for a centre to see the Southern part of the lake. The downside is it is very busy. Too many day trippers. The boats are crowded and long queues. They have also dug up most of the promenade at the moment which spoils the lakeside area. The bus is a good alternative to the ferry. Best to stay here a few days and then move on to Varenna, Lenno or Mennagio.
Despite the fact this is a budget one-star hotel, you will find everything you need in the room like hangers, a kettle, coffee, tea, etc.
The building is in a great location in the very center of the city, literally 2 minutes from the Lake of Como.
