Brimnes Bungalows, hotel in Ólafsfjörður

These Northern Iceland wooden bungalows are 50 minutes’ drive from Akureyri. Each has a private terrace with an outdoor hot tub and mountain views of the Tröllaskagi Peninsula.

This place is such a vibe. It is so cosy and simple. It really gives of country vibes. All needed amenities where there. We were only four people staying there but it is equipped for up to 8. When staying there definitely consider using the nice hot tub at night. Its just great.

Klara Guesthouse, hotel in Ólafsfjörður

A good location for a stress-free getaway in Ólafsfjörður, Klara Guesthouse is a guest house surrounded by views of the mountain.

Smartly designed and maintained interior, comfortable beds, convenient bathrooms and breakfast room which is small for the house but if one can arrange its shared use with other guests, no problem there. Nice coffee on the ground floor unfortunately opening as we were leaving at 10:30. As is usual in Iceland you don't meet the host (all is beautifully informal) but feel cared for anyway.

The spacious, clean and comfortable cottage was great! We loved the quiet location in the beautiful green surrounding with mountain and waterfall views. This was the only place (except in Reykjavik) where we met the host. I appreciated that. Of course we traveled for the scenery, but I also wanted to meet Icelanders. Olafsfjordur was also close enough to visit the surrounding area, and, gee, the tunnels were an experience also.

Looking back, I feel lucky that we ended (pretty much by chance) in Ólafsfjörður and not somewhere in the south. Driving is slow in Iceland so even just getting to Akureyri was a substantial trip but that's a constant in Iceland. Knowing what I know now, it was as good a base as any, and better than most. On our way back to the airport when we stopped by the locations of the so-called Golden Circle, with their hundreds of buses and their crowds, it felt bizzare. The main attraction of Iceland is that you can take a hike among the hills and, with just a little luck, have the whole valley for yourself (not counting the sheep). The neighboring Dalvik offers great horse rides (do look at Tvistur), the ferry to Grimsey, and more.

We arrived earlier, so the staff made sure our room was made ready. Nice room, comfy bed, beautiful sitting area to dine in (no restaurant, but make yourself). The hotel really goes above and beyond, they're so customer friendly oriented! They offer so many free things to use, for example: They have a pooltable you can use for free, even kayaks! You can grab fresh towels whenever you want and if you want new linen on your bed you only need to ask.. Also free coffee machine.

We had everything we needed - even a game! 😍 The hotel seemed abandoned and a little dark when we arrived, but proved to be a real gem!
