Basic hotel in a good location for hiking and for the thermal baths on the lake. Spacious and clean rooms. Good breakfast.
There is so much to do here, using Egilsstadir as a base.
There is so much to do here, using Egilsstadir as a base. An absolute MUST is a soak in the VÖK Baths, a mere 2km out of town.
Day trips out to the Puffin colony at Bakkafjördur, or the very cute harbour town of Seydisfjordur, for example. A trip around to Hallormsstadur as well as further day trips north are next on our list.
We had great wood-fired pizza at Askur Pizzeria and brilliant coffees at Tehusia Hostel, which had a great buzz-y vibe.

An unusual place to be sure.
An unusual place to be sure. Not too "in yer face" , nor up it's own pipe. Just about right. Superb geolocation. Car necessary to fully appreciate the opportunity on offer. Highly recommend to independent traveller.

This was a great stopping point after driving the eastern Fjords on a Sunday. They had a couple places that were open where we could eat, get gas and groceries. This town was a nice place to stay after driving through many of the lovely villages along the coast and before heading to Husavik. You're also close to Hengifoss and not far from Studlagil Canyon, though we only drove halfway down the road before we gt nervous with the icy road right on the side of a cliff.

We loved the tourist info center there along the lake with the Gunnar Gunnerson museum and restaurant. We had a great buffet meal there. We enjoyed the tourist rest area because the lady there spent time with us as we looked around at the exhibits. It was an unexpected surprise.

Good hotel overall.
Good hotel overall.
Locally, we went to Vik Baths, very good experience.
On our 10 day driving the Ring Road, we had already visited the Blue Lagoon. Vik Baths was an alternative to the Blue Lagoon, well worth visiting.

We stayed in one of their cabins located within woods close to main hotel. All guests now have good buffet breakfast available, but hotel no longer provides dinner. Lovely lounge available with great views. Staff friendly and helpful. We ate at Askur pizzeria which serves local beers too. Hotel about 10 min drive to main town and 1 hr from Puffin viewing at Hafnaholim. There is a modern cafe there too. Recommend a visit to Fardagafoss about 5 min drive & 30 min walk to waterfall with amazing views across the town.
Good choice if you're driving the Ring Road and need a stop before heading from the north to the south of Iceland (or other easy around). The hotel is a bit basic, but the restaurant serves amazing food – definitely worth dining there! They also offer free use of their washing machine and dryer, which was very convenient.
The view from our room was incredible! The even numbers are on the lake side so I would request that if you can when you book. Ours was right by the hot tubs that were barely used, we had them all to ourselves. Just and amazing hotel in a beautiful location. Lovely staff also and our best breakfast in Iceland :)
