We stayed for 3 nights and rented a car. It's a little difficult to get from Kalbaka to Kastriki and back again on foot--particularly if you're carrying luggage. There is a route, but I wouldn't want to walk it in the dark if I had an early or late bus into or out of town.
Both Kalabaka and Kastraki are really neat, unique places and we truly enjoyed our visit to both. We stayed in Kastraki and would do so again (it's closer to the monasteries).
Definitely stay at least two nights if you can, as different monasteries are open on different days.
If you plan to hike, get a good map of the trails and read the reviews ahead of time.

We drove to the great monastery.
We drove to the great monastery. We enjoyed all the great artifacts and we sat in the great hall. The town is so beautiful with great restaurants and bakeries. The town was all lit up for Christmas and children were singing. We hiked to the Holy Trinity Monastery from the Old Town Kalabaka. We also stayed in the central Kalabaka Hostel. It was very comfortable

Meteora is nothing short of remarkable, and Kalabaka is a great place to base out of to see it. All of the monasteries are within a 15 minute drive. The town overlooks several of the big rock monoliths and has a cute town square with several tavernas.

What a gorgeous, quaint little village, looks like it was lost in time. Beautifully decorated little restaurants & Cafe’s serving delicious home cooked food. The feel of this village can only be experienced not described. I want very much to go back again one day. It has everything one could desire. For those who want to hike and adventure and those who want to sit enjoy the beauty in little sidewalk cafe’s or search through brick a crack stores. Magnificent

Stayed in the quieter village of Kastraki but drove the short distance to adjoining larger town of Kalabaka to see the 11c Byzantine church.
The busier streets of Kalabaka are not overwhelming and offer a contrast to the gentler vibe of Kastraki.
Kalabaka is a commercial centre with busy streets and cafes, some of which continue the improper practice of caging songbirds for the ‘interest’ of customers!
We were pleased we stayed in Kastraki at the Doupiani House Hotel and appreciated the evening strolls through quiet jasmine-scented streets, where we were occasionally accompanied by wandering tortoises or inquisitive local cats.

Annamaria and Giorgos were fantastic hosts. It was a delight to return to this lovely family run hotel. The hosts were very accommodating with our arrival and helpful in explaining things in the town and tours available to see Meteora. The hotel was excellently located just a short walk to the centre of town and right under the Meteora. The rooms were modern and very clean with all facilities available including a great breakfast option each morning. Definitely will be back.
A pleasant hotel with a traditional Greek atmosphere. The rooms are clean and have a balcony with a view of Meteora. 😀The host is friendly and upon arrival he gave us a map with the opening hours of the monasteries and some instructions for sightseeing. We experienced a beautiful sunset in the heart of Meteora. There are many restaurants and a bakery nearby. The wifi is 5G and it was the best on our entire trip from Athens to Meteora.⭐️
Everything . A short 5 min.walk to bus and train station ,restaurants , shopping and 3 min walk to get local buses to visit monasteries, for €5.50 you can get a day pass for the buses ,it’s like a hop on off bus so you don’t have to book a tour. Excellent buffet breakfast , staff extremely efficient and helpful. Great value , spent 3 weeks travelling around Greece and this was the best hotel we stayed at.
