Norseman Hotel, hotel in Wick

Nestled in the heart of the picturesque town of Wick and overlooking Wick River, The family-run Norseman Hotel features its own private garden. It offers an on-site car park and free Wi-Fi.

We really don’t like this hotel. It was by far the worst experience we had on the North Coast 500.

Mackays Hotel, hotel in Wick

In Wick, in the beautiful area of Caithness in the Northern Highlands, Mackays offers award-winning service and fine food in No1 Bistro, as well as free Wi-Fi and parking.

Warm welcome and lady allowed us to store camping equipment in the function room, rather than on our motorbikes parked on the street. The shower was good, especially after a long and very wet ride through the glens to get there. Bed very large and comfortable. Again much appreciated.

Wick is rather a dismal looking town, but the people are very friendly and there is lots to do within a short drives. e.g. John'o'Groats, including Duncansby and Dunnet Heads, Sinclair's and Dunnet Bays, Castle Sinclair Gringoe and the Whaligoe steps. Lidl and large Tesco for food shopping/fuel stations. Ate at the Castle Hotel which was good, and had fish and chips from the High Street Chippy and Chinese, which does have some seating for eating in.

The house was very fine, delightfully quirky and full of character reflecting its long family associations and interests. My hosts were charming to the extent I felt very much at home. I left with reluctance!

I have been to Wick many times because there is plenty to see and do. This time we headed to John o Groats to the Puffin Croft Petting Farm which was such a joy.The lady who owns the farm is there to greet you and tell you about the goats, the sheep, the pigs, the donkeys, the rabbits and the Shetland pony - hope I haven't missed one! One place you must look for is the shortest street in the world which is in Wick.

Wick itself is a pretty but windswept and deeply depressed town. There is not a great deal to do in March - the walk to the castle was nice although I was almost blown off my feet. I had half a day there which was more than enough time to do everything that was open in the town. I plan to go back and explore the surrounding area over a couple of days,

Great venue, a bit confusing as the lodge number changed from what I thought I had originally booked, and they didn't have the new lodge number on the confirmation form. Buy provisions in Wick as there are no supermarkets nearby.

Location is convenient, on a main road (NC500), but actually very quiet. Great as a base for exploring north-east Scotland. Well equipped and clean. A few small issues which Abdul, the owner tried to sort or sorted immediately.
