Mackays Hotel, hotel in Wick

In Wick, in the beautiful area of Caithness in the Northern Highlands, Mackays offers award-winning service and fine food in No1 Bistro, as well as free Wi-Fi and parking.

It is a wonderful building with an interesting history. Though a bit dated, I can clearly tell how impressive it was in its glory days. I fully appreciate the staff's service, especially the quality and service at the restaurant, one of the highlights along the NC500 routes. Fun fact: The hotel is also the sole address of the "World's Shortest Street."

We spent Christmas in Wick so we didn’t do much shopping in the town. We had a lovely meal at Wickers World, very near the flat on the harbour. We also had a great meal at John o’ Groats, and enjoyed shopping there.

The town if you looked for it has a lot of interesting historical facts especially the old fishing industry. The museum is worth a visit. The sea views are very good if you walk out of town. Because we stayed on a Sunday a lot of places were closed but we did find a very nice Indian on the harbour also the bistro not far from the station was a very nice meal. The town is looking a little tired and could do with some investment but it-s a great base if you want to go to John O Groats . Train journey to Wick was a high light

Camps Bar is minutes away from the excellent Morag's cafe - well recommended, with other eating establishments close by. Wick itself is, like many other towns in Scotland, replete with many closed shops and unoccupied buildings, but the local people are among the most friendly and helpful I have come across. Would happily visit here again.

Wick is rather a dismal looking town, but the people are very friendly and there is lots to do within a short drives. e.g. John'o'Groats, including Duncansby and Dunnet Heads, Sinclair's and Dunnet Bays, Castle Sinclair Gringoe and the Whaligoe steps. Lidl and large Tesco for food shopping/fuel stations. Ate at the Castle Hotel which was good, and had fish and chips from the High Street Chippy and Chinese, which does have some seating for eating in.

This hotel was the cheapest option in Wick for that night, buy a good margin, so I wasn't expecting it to be great. I was pleasantly surprised, the reception and lounge were quite welcoming after a long day of traveling, and the bedroom was comfortable. The price we paid included breakfast, which was pretty decent.
