Located above its own terraced gardens, The Glenburn Hotel is a Victorian sandstone building which offers panoramic views across Rothesay Bay to the Cowal Peninsula.

Bute may be Scotland’s most underrated island.
Bute may be Scotland’s most underrated island. Stunning beaches, great coastal and hill walks and fine views to Arran and the Argyll Coast. Rothesay has a relaxed vibe and is full of character buildings, with a fine castle and extensive promenade and gardens, backed by handsome Victorian villas. There are some rather run down areas, perhaps reminiscent of mainland coastal towns, but also many delightful features, with regeneration projects, such as the art deco pavilion, helping to build a new image. The town centre seems to have improved lately, with a better range of cafes and restaurants. The island is small and there is an excellent bus service, so getting around without a car is easy (and far more enjoyable).

Nice wee seaside town, very friendly.
Nice wee seaside town, very friendly. We like it so much that we are planning to move there permanently. Eating out options however are very poor, most places have stopped serving by 7.30-8pm with the exception of the Chinese and Indian restaurants which are very basic.

Rothesay is the kind of place that if you are older, it reminds you of family holidays when you were young. It feels like nothing much has changed for a while. The scenery is lovely, there is wildlife and peace.

Rothesay is a lovely place to visit, we spent a week there in July. Quite a few places to visit, Mount Stuart, Ettrick Bay, Bute Yard. Popped into Ambience, lovely place. Glenburn Hotel is central for staying. So peaceful at night. The views are stunning.

I loved the Island.
I loved the Island. Rothesay is a beautiful place that like others suffered during covid. Some businesses have closed whilst others are surviving just. They are rebuilding and refurbishing slowly. The Island itself has so much charm. Driving round stopping at the bays remains scenic and idyllic. Nothing can change nature and it is in abundance here. You will not be disappointed with the scenery. From the quaint tea rooms and repurposed phone boxes there is something to grab your attention everywhere you go. Food recommendations are the Glenburn hotel fish and chips and the Cadillac Hotel diner with the best burgers on the Island. Take the time to explore every corner as they are all different

Terrific hotel and hosts, really accommodating. We went with our 2-year old and made to feel very welcome - a very cosy family feel. Also ideal location for exploring and for getting into Rothesay for dinner. Will definitely be going back when next on Bute. Thank you!
We have stayed many times before. I find it now lacks atmosphere and entertainment. We go into town but the hotel could be making money from customers to keep us there. We brought our own board games as even the pool room is closed.
