Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.
Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Not a great time to visit (Christmas holidays) as a number of things we'd like to have visited were shut as they belong to the university. But spent most of Sunday in the Cathedral: went for the service, then sent ages as tourists in this fascinating place. Don't resist paying for the museum: well worth it, especialy if like us you get a guided tour. The gafe/restaurant is very good.
Pleasant town to walk around, even in the cold and damp, with penty of places for a cuppa. We'll be back in th warmer weather to see some more!

Durham's centre has attractive pedestrian-friendly streets, with interesting pubs, restaurants and one-off shops. Definitely walk up to the cathedral.
Two good eateries are Zen (Thai) and The Rabbit Hole (speakeasy styled Chinese)

Durham is a compact gem of a city: its bounties are belted in and tied around by the river Wear. River walks and cathedral views are a must. Active people will find miles of running paths, each with a sensational vista of its own. The snug in the Dunn Cow remains my favourite pub ever. Restaurants get busy at peak times, so make sure you find the cuisine you fancy (Durham has a generous field) and book in advance. Same for places to stay: watch out for peak university times.

Quaint compact city, lots of cobbles, great cathedral and castle at the top of the hill. Small shops and cafes. Can recommend river side walks, indoor market and cathedral shop and cafe. Easily accessed by train. This last visit was specifically for the Christmas market - well worth it and the kids carol service in the cathedral was a bonus.

Small enough to navigate in a weekend.
Small enough to navigate in a weekend. Major attractions - cathedral and castle- within touching distance. Both amazing and guides were both interesting and informative. Quaint cobbled streets and central square. Absence of the usual chain stores and a myriad of small shops and eateries helping to create a unique atmosphere. I loved it!

Loved a walk around the peninsula and the views of the cathedral were spectacular from all directions. Worth attending a service if you can for the experience of hearing the choir even if you are not religious. Lots of places to eat but worth booking as very busy at the weekend with students and visitors. Recommend the service and experience at Rio Durham and the cafe in the market is a hidden gem.

The hotel was clean and the staff were friendly. They made us a lovely surprise for our anniversary. The bed was comfy. The only thing is that the view from the bed is blocked by the bathroom and the deluxe double room is not that big . Otherwise everything was great and the location is perfect right in the city centre and there is paid onsite parking. The breakfast was nice too .
Friendly staff
Very nice food in the bar / restaurant
Spacious bedroom with good shower
Good coffee / tea making facilities
Convenient car parking outside the hotel
Just 10 minutes easy walk to Durham city centre
The hotel was perfectly placed for a quick stroll into the city centre. The staff were really friendly and very helpful. The room was perfect. It was really clean and well appointed.
