Lovely stay. A bus stop couple of minutes from the hotel takes you into Durham. The lady on reception was very welcoming and the lady in the cafe was equally welcoming.

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.
Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Durham's centre has attractive pedestrian-friendly streets, with interesting pubs, restaurants and one-off shops. Definitely walk up to the cathedral.
Two good eateries are Zen (Thai) and The Rabbit Hole (speakeasy styled Chinese)

Durham is a compact gem of a city: its bounties are belted in and tied around by the river Wear. River walks and cathedral views are a must. Active people will find miles of running paths, each with a sensational vista of its own. The snug in the Dunn Cow remains my favourite pub ever. Restaurants get busy at peak times, so make sure you find the cuisine you fancy (Durham has a generous field) and book in advance. Same for places to stay: watch out for peak university times.

Quaint compact city, lots of cobbles, great cathedral and castle at the top of the hill. Small shops and cafes. Can recommend river side walks, indoor market and cathedral shop and cafe. Easily accessed by train. This last visit was specifically for the Christmas market - well worth it and the kids carol service in the cathedral was a bonus.

Small enough to navigate in a weekend.
Small enough to navigate in a weekend. Major attractions - cathedral and castle- within touching distance. Both amazing and guides were both interesting and informative. Quaint cobbled streets and central square. Absence of the usual chain stores and a myriad of small shops and eateries helping to create a unique atmosphere. I loved it!

Loved a walk around the peninsula and the views of the cathedral were spectacular from all directions. Worth attending a service if you can for the experience of hearing the choir even if you are not religious. Lots of places to eat but worth booking as very busy at the weekend with students and visitors. Recommend the service and experience at Rio Durham and the cafe in the market is a hidden gem.

The property is on the outskirts of Durham, it’s a very easy 10 to 15 minute drive into the city centre. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The whole of the property was spotlessly clean. Compact room with a very comfortable bed, good sized bathroom and tea / coffee making facilities. We paid for the continental breakfast with our booking which is more than adequate to start your day. There is a small WH Smith and McDonald’s next door.
Quiet location, little bit out of city centre but good transport links and walkable. Loved the apartment, warm and cosy but plenty of space and good facilities. I felt like I could really relax there after exploring Durham and nearby places during the day. Would definitely book it again.
The hotel was perfectly placed for a quick stroll into the city centre. The staff were really friendly and very helpful. The room was perfect. It was really clean and well appointed.
