Everything! We were so sad to leave. We love travel so have stayed in some amazing hotels across the world (including other Relais & Chateaux properties), but after our stay at Gidleigh Park, we realized this might have been the BEST hotel ever - even including some very special Japanese ryokans.
What made it so wonderful:
- The staff were all so genuinely nice. We had a lot of odd requests (since I’m pregnant and my husband has very specific dietary preferences), and I’m sure they secretly thought we were total weirdos, but they did a great job covering this up - no request was too strange! Examples: 1.) my husband became addicted to Innocent smoothies during our stay in England and insisted on having some every day (…even in a Michelin-starred hotel), so they kept them in the fridge for us and brought out the bottles whenever he wanted to pour a glass; 2.) I went down each morning to have breakfast but my husband prefers to sleep in, so I would request a takeaway homemade croissant for him. This request alone wasn’t too bad perhaps, but the croissants were so good warmed up, so we would later request to have them warmed right before he ate them - which they kindly did…
- The food is SUPERB - I could’ve eaten for weeks straight just at the casual lounge (we’d normally try the formal restaurant too, but saving this for next time when I have fewer pregnancy food restrictions, to fully enjoy!). Best Eggs Benedict I’ve ever had, with perfectly poached golden-orange yolks (I’ve only ever seen such perfect eggs before in Japan), sumptuous afternoon tea, truffled cheese soufflé, really good strong pots of Earl Grey and Mini Pu Erh Cake (!) tea, amazing fresh fish and brothy beans… all in a cozy casual living room/conservatory setting where they let you open the patio doors, or sit outdoors (very nice if you’re being extra Covid-cautious while pregnant like me)!
On the edge of Dartmoor National Park, Mill End Hotel features a creative restaurant, elegant bedrooms and free Wi-Fi. The hotel is set in leafy grounds just outside Chagford.

Built around the famous South Zeal Menhir Standing Stone, this 12th-century manor house is set in its own 4-acre monastery gardens in a pretty Devonshire village.
In the heart of Dartmoor National Park and 15 minutes from the A30, the historic, Bovey Castle sits high on the valley's edge. It offers a spa and golf course, and free parking.

This facility is absolutely stunning and very charming. We visited as part of our 36th wedding anniversary to get away from the big city atmosphere and we're so glad to have chosen this wonderful location as part of our European Holiday! WE WILL BE BACK!!

Location is excellent; rooms comfortable; some elements of the food excellent (great homemade pie, e.g.), rest good enough. Been before and I'll probably go again.

The roads into the village are small and tight and it isn't the sort of village you will drive past, you have to go out of your way to come here and to be honest it shows. If any of you have ever watched the League of Gentlemen "this is a local shop for local people, there is nothing for you here" there is that sort of vibe throughout the village.
It looks stunning, nice historic buildings, town square but the moment you enter the village you feel like an outsider, going into local farm shops and people just stare, talk to you without making eye contact it is all very strange.
Ok firstly if you want to eat food DO NOT go to the Chagford Inn, the prices are disgusting for what they actually bring you, £20 for a burger which literally consisted of a burger smaller than a standard Mcdonalds cheese burger, 10-12 fries and leaf salad, my partner had Pate for starter which cost £10 and the entire starter was finished with one tablespoon, cannot comment on other places.
It seems very much like the village is run on rules and if your not from the village they will make you feel like that an outsider, was not very welcoming place.
Beehive Farm shop is brilliant, all homemade breads, pasties, food it was very nice and would recommend this rather than going to the Spar.

If you want to combine a culinary experience with peace and quiet in an English country setting, Gidleigh Park should be on your list of destinations.
Chagford is a beautiful unspoiled town on the edge of Dartmoor with four pubs. I would recommend the Ring O Bells, who's signature pies are probably the best I have ever had in an public house.
Castle Drogo is a stunning NT treasure and a must visit.
The roads are very narrow so you will need a steady nerve when travelling around.

I loved this little village, enough to keep me interested. Great shops that catered for people with food allergies. Would definitely return.
Ate at both The Three Crowns and Chagford Inn, both of which were excellent.

Excellent choice of places to eat, pubs and cafes. Good range of shops with butchers and bakers as well as a Spar convenience store.
Bowden hardware was a real highlight, an alladins cave... Something for everyone!
The main reason for our visit was the local walks, Fenworthy Reservoir and Castle Drogo were two we enjoyed, would go further next time.
Very dog friendly area.
