We were in the area for a family wedding , so were not sightseeing. I would love to return with a good bike to explore the surrounding countryside.
Lots of local wildlife, and not very hilly for an older cyclist.

Undiscovered gem of a town with some beautiful architectural buildings, especially of the Georgian era. Spacious centre with a good range of independent shops and a lovely covered market. Very walkable distance for the main railway station with frequent trains to London and Scotland.

The hotel is beautiful.
The restaurant food is lovely although the menu is limited.
The pool and the jacuzzi were a wonderful treat, the staff in the leisure centre were polite and helpful.
We had a slight issue with noise from some neighbours and spoke to the manager, who was more than helpful.
Very welcoming host, very tidy bright white clean, very quiet spacious room, I remember after I left the hotel they kept my Galaxy phone in the safe to collect .I do recommend it for any one visiting the north east and Darlington as well.
The hotel was situated in the town centre but was a little difficult to find, There was nothing special about it compared with other Mercure Hotels. The stay and facility was adequate
