FAQs about hotels in Canterbury

Heavenly Heritage and Literary Legend

Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.

River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.

From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.

In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

Regular visitors to Canterbury to attend events.

Regular visitors to Canterbury to attend events. We love Canterbury- the Cathedral is amazing and the river makes it a special place. Town is easy to get around but parts are cobbled which can be hard on the feet so wear good shoes. Lots of choice for eating and loads of characterful pubs. Boat rides in the sunny weather are recommended.

Loved Canterbury. So much to see. Very quaint and historic. I liked the fact that lots of it is pedestrianised. It's easy to get around the whole centre of the city. The Xmas lights were lovely. I definitely would like to go back

Easy to navigate all on the flat, lots of busy little independant shops selling unusual items for christmas gifts.Lots of bars cafe and restaurants of many nationalities.Easy base to explore the area from and not far from the coast. Not any empty shops and a good range of christmas stalls at the market.Cathedral is beautiful and well worth a visit. The river must look beautiful in summer but even now in winter the banks are planted out with colour and well tended. Needed longer-a lot to see!!

This was my wife's favourite place to stay during our break. It was clean. It was also quiet, which impressed me given one evening there was live music in the pub below. By chance, they happened to serve my favourite beer from my student days, and I can assure you I did test it, although not in my student day style. The Inn is very well placed to explore both Canterbury and the surrounding area, being in walking distance of the town centre, well placed for driving, and very close to one of the railway stations.

The hotel was only a 7 minute walk to Canterbury town centre but was on a quiet calm little street. The room size was great and it was lovely and warm with a spare blanket. There was a kettle and a coffee pot to make teas and coffees as well as a little fridge if we had anything we wanted to keep in there. The bed was super comfy and shower was lovely. Self check in and out was particularly handy and very secure and safe.

Excellent hotel with a perfect location for exploring Canterbury. It was our anniversary and the staff were kind enough to upgrade us & decorated the room, which was greatly appreciated. The newly refurbished bar area was also really nice and they are clearly very proud of it. Thank you!
